Dirty Academy Award

Jay Thomas from Sirius Sat.Radio made the comment it wasn't a clean award. Does anyone know what this means. This a real question. I'm not just being mean

When she won in 1993, Jack Palance (the previous year's winner) was acting like a jerk, such as doing one-armed pushups and everyone thought he was drunk. When he announced her as the winner some people thought he called out the wrong name because he was inebriated. That rumor's dogged her for the last 22 years.

"No! That’s not true at all. Elvis takes fifty percent of everything I earn." Col. Parker

Also:
When Jack Palance got on stage he joked that all the nominated actresses were foreign; Australia, The UK and Brooklyn {meaning Marisa Tomei}. When he announced her name as the winner, people were surprised. They thought he had made a mistake and did not want to admit it on stage. Marisa was a young actress in a comedy, nominated for the first time, just off a TV series {Different Worlds} and was up against Judy Davis, Joan Plowright, Vanessa Redgrave and Miranda Richardson. Four well established actresses in highly dramatic movies. Her win was called an upset, but if you ever watch "My Cousin Vinnie", her courtroom scene is a classic performance of timing and shifting emotions. She does an amazing job and deserved to be recognized with the award. Since then she has gone on to two more nominations for dramatic roles, so her talents are evident. The so called "stigma of her win" should end. She is a proven actress that knows how to pick her material...And yes...I am a fan of Marisa Tomei.

This was just an earned upset, similar to 1951 when Judy Holiday got the Best Actress Oscar for 'Born Yesterday', a comedy, beating out Bette Davis in 'All About Eve' AND Gloria Swanson in 'Sunset Boulevard'. Sometimes the right comedic role is more challenging and the right actress puts in one helluva performance that others can't.

What happened is two more deserving actresses divided the vote and Tomei edged them out with a plurality. In any case, she has proven to be a fine actress

Some of my family members rented My Cousin Vinny when it first came out on VHS.
When the movie was done we all said the same thing and that was how good she was. She deserved the award and has been nominated two more times for the Academy Award proving it was not a fluke.
