I've never understood the hype over this woman

I really don't see what everyone else sees in her. I mean don't get me wrong she's not ugly, but there are people on here and in magazines calling her gorgeous or beautiful and I just don't see it. She has an alright face and a nice body but there's nothing that stands out about her that makes me go Oh my God!!!! Even when she was younger she wasn't that great looking like in My Cousin Vinny. When I think of a beautiful older woman I think of Uma Thurman.

I get what you're saying at first glance she's nothing to brag about. I'm not sure what it is but when observing her screen presence you begin to notice how gorgeous she is. Especially for a woman who's about to be 50!

reply

There is indeed a mysterious and strong sexiness surrounding her.

reply

Having never met 'er I have no idea what she's like, but, physically, I wouldn't mind giving 'er a go....

There was no hype over her when she was young. She was always attractive, but not that attractive. It started after she passed 40, because it became conspicuous how good she looks for her age. It probably also helped that while in the nineties she was looked down on because of her undeserved Oscar, in the 00s she has really proven herself as an actress.

She's better looking than almost any other actresses in Hollywood at her age. Uma Thurman never looked hot to me, and she's 6 years younger anyway.

reply

Well I think one reason she looks better for her age than most of the other actresses is that she didn't have kids. If you notice when a woman has kids it tends to put some serious stress on their bodies that seems result in them showing their age more as they get older.

She's was an average actress who happened to look great nude in her early 40s and wasn't afraid to show it off in films.

This is a simple and obvious way for female actresses to get a late-career bump. Hollywood burns through actresses at a furious clip and prefers them young, despite the fact that most of them look fabulous into their 50s thanks to nutrition, fitness and medical science and no small genetic contribution.

Being willing to show off your body is an easy way to get a role that might go to a younger actress and get a bunch of acclaim. Looking great nude and being willing to show it off can sway some casting choices when most people have a bias against women in their late 30s or early 40s as "old", especially if they're bombarded by younger actresses all the time.

I don't think her acting was ever anything special. While I was plenty willing to accept her Oscar for "Vinny", I'm not entirely sure how much "acting" went into portraying an east coast Italian-American stereotype when you were literally raised in the geographic center of east coast Italian-America, Brooklyn, NY. It would have been a more compelling Oscar if the actress involved had been born in Omaha, Nebraska.

Whatever, stripping in "Before the Devil.." and "Wrestler" got her back onto the map and probably breathed life into a career that might have gone nowhere. And probably equally helpful is her willingness to take almost any role, even in turkeys nobody remembers.

Here is what's up with Tomei.

She is very attractive, but not in that weird "super model, there is no way a woman looks like that, and no way would she give you the time of day" way.

She seems like someone you might see in everyday life. Upon first glance you see that she is cute and in nice shape. But then you look at her more closely. You see the cutie along with the personality, and her attractiveness jumps off the chart.

First off, it wasn't the point if she truly deserved it or not. People thought she didn't.

Second, maybe it was a bad year, but Oscar shouldn't not be given for a role like that. She pulled off it very well, but the role wasn't complex and didn't need outstanding acting skills.

reply

She deserved the Oscar.

reply

I agree.

Oscar for what?

reply

My Cousin Vinny-best supporting actress

reply

oh ok, it was a good performance. not sure it was Oscar worthy.

reply

It wasn't. Everyone back then thought Vanessa Redgrave would win that Oscar with her dramatic performance in Howards End. It was such a shock that a lot of people thought Jack Palance was drunk and didn't read the right name. Just to say...
