STX drops GYPSY

Some other sites say she's shopping it around, they say it's over.

I think part of the reason Streisand did this mini-tour was to prove that
she can still belt songs across and that she can still look charismatic
and stunning.

She can and did.

The problem is, she can't pass as the mother of young daughters,
especially when the whole world knows she is 74. And, again, younger
people today don't know or appreciate this magical score or material.

Once more, Streisand looks like a stunning, magical legend in those
clips from her L.A. show Tuesday. But she does NOT look thin, or anything
under 70.

For Lord's sake, she needs to let this go already.

She should have done Gypsy a long time ago, like when she was wasting her talent on Fockers type stuff (even though it was fun). There is such a thing as waiting too long, and it being too late...even for Barbra Streisand.

First of all, she was way too old THEN, as well. Secondly, I suspect
(but could be wrong) that was WAS trying to get "Gypsy" off the ground
then.

Really, the last time period she could've pulled Mama Rose off well is
roughly twenty years ago.

I'm thinking in the mid 80s, between YENTL & NUTS for a few reasons:

A. She was the right age.

B. She returned to her 'roots' with the mega-succesful 'The Broadway Album', in which she sang nothing from GYPSY. Imagine a whole recording of this legendary musical right after TBA?

C. She had great success with YENTL (not a traditional musical) and the OMS (#9 on The Album Charts), so imagine what GYPSY OMS could do?

I agree MOSTLY.

Yes, Streisand could've pulled off the AGE in the '80s, and she
certainly had hits with BOTH Broadway albums.

But the TASTE of most people after 1980 wasn't conducive to this
legendary score.

Basically, there's TWO problems: Streisand's age and the inability of
most movie-goers to appreciate the stunning score and book.

Too bad, as the only film adaptation to date is the 1962 film version...
which is fairly mediocre.

Around the same time, Jule Styne reported that Bette Midler (who was enjoying a resurgence in Hollywood movies) made a nice offer to buy it for a movie remake starring herself, but they wouldn't sell it to her, for fear of her 'destroying it'. Midler is two years younger than Streisand.

That prompted them discussing a Broadway revival directed by Laurents, which finally happened in 1989. Allegedly, they offered the revival to Midler (who refused) and Liza Minnelli (who refused) before turning their attention to Tyne Daly.

The revival ran for two years, and picked up a handful of Tony Awards - including one for Daly. (After the Tony wins in 1990, both Midler and Minnelli claimed they were never offered the role.)
