Gypsy - Who is she kidding? Only herself....

Acknowledge her incredible talent all you want - is she delusional? She's 74 and will play the mother (at the beginning) of a 10-year-old. And in the 1920s and 1930s, facelifts and botox were NOT invented yet. So she fails on the age and the look. I mean really...to call this a vanity project is an insult to vanity projects. If she wants to do another musical, then why not one that centres on an old lady, or get one written for her, but Gypsy? At least her plastic surgeon should tell her, "Hey, I do good work, but I don't perform miracles!"

I have to agree. 74 is just too old to play Mama Rose. Even with cosmetic surgery and CGI. Streisand looks great, but she doesn't look like a character who starts out under 40 (I think, she could be, not sure). Neither have a lot of women who have played the part, but Streisand has at least 10 years on the oldest of them.

I hope she changes her mind or it somehow falls through.

Why? Bette Midler did an amazing tv movie version in the 90's and Midler was born to play Rose.

Vanity project as you say is an understatement.

Some of the older Rose's were on stage, where you can more easily get away with things like age appropriateness. But the camera doesn't lie, and in this case, the camera will say, "You are too old to play this part." Unless they film the whole thing without any close-ups!

Bette Middler was, as she is most of the time, WAYYYYYYYY too over the top. She performed it as if she were on the stage.

Agreed. Midler is a terrific performer, but as an actress...not so. She plays one character - Bette Midler. Granted, she plays that character well, but it doesn't work for everything.

That's the problem I have with her movies, as well. I never see her as anyone but Bette Midler in each film.

Oh, and we don't see STREISAND in every roles SHE has played?? Get serious. I
enjoy a number of Streisand's films, but we see BARBRA in every role, as well.
She is a personality actress, through and through. A damned good one, but
personality nonetheless.

I haven't - especially in her earlier films of the 60s and early 70s. To each his own.
