Better in comedies or dramas?
He's awesome in both but I'll give the slight edge to comedies.
shareTwo years and no one responded. What did you think of him in the Sisters Brothers which is the only drama in which I recall seeing him
shareHe was good in The Sisters Brothers. It really depends on the material he is given. Great in Talledega Nights, bad in Dewey Cox. Great in Magnolia, mediocre in The River Wild.
shareI loved Sisters Brothers, he was great in it.
Boogie Nights, Casualties of War, We Need To Talk About Kevin, What's Eating Gilbert Grape.. He's been in some great dramas and given great performances in those, but I think I like him in comedies slightly more like the OP.
We Need To Talk About Kevin is haunting and he was great in it... though I couldn't help but think they miscast him as the husband to Tilda. They just didn't fit as a couple, but I guess that could have been the point.
shareI had no clue that he was in Casualties of War. I just went back and watched a couple scenes on YouTube. Man, he was very young and green but, pretty good. I have to say that watching is facial expressions in that movie, you do kind of get the feeling he’s about to crack a joke
shareHe was solid in Sister Brothers, but I first became a fan of his in Magnolia.
shareHe really turned out to be the lead character and maybe even the more dangerous of the two gunfighters in Sisters Brothers which you don’t expect considering the presence of Joaquin Phoenix. It was cool to see him as a menacing character which is also unexpected. I have to go back and watch Magnolia. I barely even recall the premise
shareMagnolia is in my top 3 movies. I've seen it so many times and it's 3 hours that go by quick.
shareAgreed. His Dr. Steve Brule is immortal - Tim said he just showed up one day and let it rip :

I was never a fan of that character, but I think he's usually pretty funny.
