Lynn was better, more natural. Vanessa is in her head.

never liked Vanessa's self-consciousness in her acting, like she's thinking about what she's going to say her next line or make a gesture.
I want to tell her to get on with it, that saying 'hello' doesn't take a memory exercise.

The original poster has never taken an acting class is seems. Like the other person said, a movie or play has been worked over SO much. I've taken a few screenwriting classes and the first thing you learn is that real life is BORING! You may say, "Excuse me." in the store, but if that excuse me isn't pushing the film forward, who cares??? Vanessa is EXCELLENT! In everything she does. Her performance in Atonement and Venus shows her power at making small parts have an impact! Lynn did the same with her 3 minutes scene in Kinsey, but that scene had her shaving off the layers...she just didn't flat out say it. Seems to me, the OP likes comedies where it is quickly said. Drama, however, requires much more depth. I thought Lynn should have won both her Oscars in 66 and 98 (and yes, even beating Vanessa in '66) but Vanessa is, in no way, a dull actor. Even Tenneessee Williams called her the greatest and he had greats in his plays and in the film versions!
