Funny Thing About the 'Brat Pack'

First, think of the actors in the same age range who avoided the mainstream movies that the Brat Pack 'acted' in

Sean Penn
Tom Cruise
John Cusack
Matt Dillon
Matthew Broderick

Now compare them to the Brat Pack

Judd Nelson
Andrew McCarthy
Anthony Michael Hall
Emilio Estevez

Notice something? lol

Here's a hint: One group is still relative, still working the A-list, still out in front of the 'pack', and the other list is working the straight to DVD/cable "I'll take anything I can get" jobs

That is with the exception of Emilio, who always wanted to write and direct instead of acting

I remember reading that Andrew McCarthy would be the next Cary Grant
Judd Nelson was supposed to have a career along the lines of Sean Penn

and whodathunk that Anthony Michael Hall would turn out to be effective acting like a menacing bully whack job?

interesting careers, but one that shows where the real talent lies

I wouldn't say Dillon & Broderick are "in front of the pack" and "A-List" but I see what you're saying otherwise.

Robert downey jnr was brat pack and he's done alright for himself.

Who the F cares? Those are just stupid boxes you're putting those actors into. Look at them as individuals, not as a group.

Most "successful" actors have a period of about three to five years when they're really hot. Think of people like Gloria DeHaven and John Hodiak (who, you say?) With some it just comes earlier in life than others.

Well, Tom Cruise's career is O-V-E-R and I think that every actor would prefer to fade into obscurity than have all of their accomplishments in acting overshadowed and mostly forgotten due to now being known as the biggest laughing stock and whack job in the media/movie industry for decades to come. I don't think that anyone of the brat pack would want to swap with that creep, no matter how much money he made with his movies. Apart from that, who's heard of John Cusack after High Fidelity and where is Matt Dillon now, let alone Matthew Broderick? They all might have stretched their fame into the 90's or even 00's, but they're no more successful than anyone else from the brat pack nowadays. Sean Penn might be an accomplished actor, but who can stand that woman beater/hypocritical freak? The men you're listing as the successful ones aren't really better remembered because of their good movies but because of their embarrassing behavior in their private lives and the constant mention of their names on gossip blogs. That's all. I don't know if that's what a real actor is striving for.

As to Andrew McCarthy, I read that he pretty much kept to himself in the 80's and wasn't that much involved in the brat pack shenanigans or didn't give many interviews. I guess he wasn't really interested in being a big movie star or in the tabloids all the time and just enjoyed acting and doing his job.

Tom Cruise as a leading action man might be over, "might", but his career is hardly over.
He produced and starred in two movies, Knight and Day and Valkyrie, which combined made almost $500 MILLION worldwide, which were his last two movies, and you say that his career is over?

And trust me, Judd Nelson would gladly switch places with him. Hell, Judd would probably settle for a "featured extra" in one of Tom's movies.

The only reason Andrew McCarthy has a career was because of Weekend at Bernies. IF not for those two movie$ he would be on the unemployment line.

who's heard of John Cusack after High Fidelity and where is Matt Dillon now, let alone Matthew Broderick? They all might have stretched their fame into the 90's or even 00's, but they're no more successful than anyone else from the brat pack nowadays.

that's funny. You have no clue what you are talking about.

Do you even understand the difference between starring in a feature film, producing a feature film, and 'starring' in a made for Lifetime television or straight to cable movie?

No need to answer. You obviously dont.

Just because you havent heard of War Inc, or Crash, or Hot Tub Time Machine, or You Me And Dupree, or 2012... etc, doesnt mean others havent.
With the exception of War Inc, all of those movies were hits and have happened in the last 5 years.

You need perspective kid and you shouldnt respond on emotion.

Clearly the ones I have listed have had a much larger career than the less fortunate of the pack, and can still star in a movie.

And Matthew Broderick has made a huge name for himself on Broadway.

I bet you havent seen one Andrew McCarthy since Weekend at Bernies, have you? Or even heard of one?

you forgot to add rob lowe and demi moore in your list of brat packers, they did pretty good for themselves. Though of course molly ringwald and ally sheedy were brat packers who didn't do much after the 80s.
