Because the US went around the world and supported fascist and authoritarian regimes under the guise of fighting "communism" and engaged in imperialist wars just to expand and maintain their hegemony. (Nor were they averse to supporting communist regimes either when it suited them; see Yugoslavia.)
For example, in Indonesia, the Indonesian Army and various death squads, spurred on by the US, the UK and various other Western governments, killed 500,000-1,200,000 people in 1965-66 just because they were ethnic Chinese, for example, and therefore supposedly "communist".
(And later on, they invaded East Timor, again supported by the US, and killed about 44% of the population, which is the highest % of dead within a population since WWII, when up to 75% of Jews in Europe were killed.)
