Rebecca De Mornay starred opposite Tom Cruise when they were both young actors on the rise. Cruise went on to star in Top Gun and became the biggest movie star in the world. De Mornay, on the other hand, struggled to capitalize on her early success.
She was popular with a lot of decent roles. The Three Musketeers, the Hand that Rocks the Cradle, and Feds for example. Hollywood fame is fleeting and she peaked in the late 80's early 90's. By that time, Kim Basinger and Sharon Stone cornered the hot blonde market.
That was followed up by Mira Sorvino and Uma Thurman. There were others, but like De Mornay, they all peaked or angered guys like Weinstein (Sorvino suffered the biggest Career hit from him as far as I know).
She had an icy cold demeanor that didn't translate well for roles where more heartfelt depth and empathy could be explored. She also had a somewhat humorless vibe to her, imho. Other actresses from her era probably won roles she auditioned for because of this; i.e. - Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mia Sara, Melanie Griffith, Mary Elizabeth Mastriantonio, Ellen Barkin, Lorraine Bracco, Annette Bening, Glenne Headley, and Diane Lane.
Rebecca wasn't all that down-to-earth. In the June/July '87 issue of Scene, she refused to be photographed by a pool ("I'm not a pool person"*). The closest thing to a joke that she had told in that interview was at the end: "People are always acting. It's like the way you eat a dish of ice cream in a really fancy restaurant versus the way you eat it in your hotel in front of the TV."
She was surprisingly okay with being interviewed by Playboy for their June 1993 issue where she admitted that she is a very self-absorbed person.
* Although she later let her hair down in Blind Side (1993).
