His career trajectory seems a bit like Welles, Bogdanovich... he started making amazing films... and then struggled to duplicate his initial success. He's pretty old, but maybe he can make one decent comeback film before he retires.
Rumble Fish
I know, it feels odd to pick that one over the Godfather films (my favorite of his for the longest time) and Apocalypse Now. But the more and more I watched that film, the more impressed and engrossed I was by it. I personally feel it's one of the most unique films ever made.
I should watch this one again... I saw it when it came out, but I don't remember it well. I'm sure it would be a totally different experience today.
shareLoved both film and novel as a kid!!! Thought it was the coolest most artistic yet consumable film i would ever see...rewatched it in my adulthood...hated it! But not to worry...I believe my dislike was due to my outgoing cool...shame really! Lately I've been trying to step out of my midlife comfort zone...re embracing things I was fond of in my youth....maybe I'll give it another try😉👍

Dracula has some great elements (Gary Oldman & set design) and some truly awful ones (Keanu & the overall plot)
I actually quite enjoyed Jack with Robin Williams, which gets laughed off for some reason, and is a deeper movie than it gets credit for
Just watched one of Coppola's more recent films Tetro, and it's underwhelming, though not bad.
Thanks for the notes on Jack and Tetro... I've always wanted to see Jack in spite of its bad reputation as I like the actors... especially Diane Lane... maybe I'll finally check it out. Tetro... I've heard was good but I missed it when it came out and never got around to catching up with it.

Other films I generally like (don't love): The Rainmaker, Youth Without Youth, The Outsiders, The Cotton Club, Tetro, Twixt, Godfather II and One from the Heart.
Jack isn't as bad as people say, but it needed a rewrite to work out the kinks. Meanwhile the artsy Rumble Fish has some points of interest despite being overall mediocre.
I still need to see a couple of his films, like The Rain People and Finian's Rainbow.

shareCertainly, I feel the characters are very well defined and I truly sympathize with them and formed an emotional connection. The acting is top notch, Pacino, De Niro, Duvall, Cazale, Gazzo, Strasberg, Shire, Spradlin etc. were all on their A games. There is a ton of symbolism (such as the final 3 shots showing Michael by himself in 1941, Vito with his family in 1925 and Michael once again alone in 1959) and the thing is I keep on picking up on more of it every time I watch it. I like how a lot of times Coppola doesn't reveal what is going on in the characters heads but leaves it to the audience to pick up the pieces, such as it has been hypothesized that Fredo knew when he went out on the boat with Neri that he was a goner and he just accepted his fate. Even though Fredo wasn't in the first film a lot I really enjoyed his expanded role in the second, Cazale is a great actor and it's a shame he left us so early. Finally the parallel's between Michael and Vito were again very well executed and I loved the subplot of showing how Vito rose to power in the 1920's.
Just my opinion.

I'd read where Streep offered to put her fee for "The Deer Hunter" in escrow when the insurance company could not insure Cazale there because he was Stage 4.
Awesome and that is admirable that Streep would have done that for Cazale. I think I read somewhere that every film Cazale was ever in was either nominated for or won Best Picture (The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, The Deer Hunter)
I actually didn't like The Godfather Part II the first time I saw it, I thought it was directionless but after repeated viewings it became one of my favorite films ever. It definitely can be dry in some places and it definitely takes a lot of patience and I suggest not watching it all in one sitting.
