I just can't...

force myself to sit through any of his movies, other than Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Beetlejuice. The rest suck. There, I said it.

Those are definitely his best movies, but you should at least watch Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish.

Sweeney Todd is amazing if you don't hate musicals, and Mars Attacks is a pretty underrated comedy.

With what happened to Tim Burton I think it was a combination of a few things.

He was basically this counterculture, high art director in the 90s; famous for being a weird outsider at the time. You can't be the anti-pop culture force once you become so big that you are pop culture. All the people who used to love him for that now couldn't stand him because even Grandma knows who he is and likes his movies. I think the same thing happened to Christopher Nolan but too a far lesser degree; early films were sort of avant-garde but not enough to alienate big audiences.

As a result of that, he seems dated to 1990s. Using the same actors doesn't help.

There's also the fact that careers peak. When culture is done with you, they're done with you for a good while. In the case of someone like Burton, unable to reinvent himself and totally dependent on a very signature style, it's even more amplified. I've seen the same thing happen with multiple comedians throughout the years. When their brand of comedy is no longer in style, it's fucking over for them.

Thank you colonel_inguss for your brief yet pointless topic, we were all wondering how you felt, now we know.

Yep, they all suck because you are incapable of sitting through them.

reply

Can't be too pointless, you cared enough to reply. Your boy is a hack director, deal with it.

reply

A hack? a 30+ year career suggests otherwise.
Although this hack kept you watching those films, and then searched for his profile and then posted on it LOL Guess the jokes on you.

reply

Yes, a 30 year career that spawned 2 good movies. Tim Burton sucks.

reply

his first 8 are great, same with the coen bros.

Actually I'm fascinated by your taste of movies. I watched Pee Wee one time. Lots of great ideas, yes, but far away from being his best work. Honestly. So if you think this one of his best stuff, well, let put it like that: it's like stating that "Jack" was Coppola's best piece of work and everything before and after was forgettable.
