As for your first couple of sentence's id say no , he was like a B list supporting 'movie star' at best even in his hey day , nothing he did where he headlined was a hit like The Getaway or The Shadow. biggest he came to a hit movie of his own was probably Hunt For Red October but Sean Connery was the star (he then had headlining the Jack Ryan franchise taken from him by mega star Harrison Ford). later in his career he was in big hits Mission 5/6 and Departed but as part of a secondary cast ensemble
