Why are starring roles for Liv Tyler relatively rare?

The A-list career that seemed to be hers for the taking back by 1998 never materialized. In the mid-90s, she was a critical darling in a string independent movies and appeared in a summer blockbuster in Armageddon.

She wasn't a very good actress, and she aged out of her 20s.

reply

Yes. She was mediocre with a pretty face. I think her stint on 9-1-1 lone star showed her limitations.

She's still working, I last saw her in that miniseries about the 17th century Gunpowder Plot.

She's still lovely, but she's learned nothing about acting over the years, and she's had some obvious plastic surgery that should have kept her out of period roles. I wish her the best, but really, any career based on looks is going to have a quick expiration date.

I still don't mind watching her, and I was a little sad that she wasn't in season 2, but I wouldn't call her a good actress. Still love her in Empire Records though

The Gunpowder Plot series had a season 2??? Everybody died!!!

Oh, right, different show! Anyway, I saw she was also in some streaming series about historical whores, so she's still working. She seems to be a lovely person, and I heard that she was in "Gunpowder" because she was friends with Kit Harrinton who produced and starred. So she's still working and she's still got friends, but if she never hit the top of the A-list it's because she lacked a certain level of talent and charisma. And maybe ambition as well.

reply

no. Season 2 of 9-1-1 lone star. Sorry I should have been more clear.

reply

She was absolutely gorgeous but she didn't really have the acting range to back it up.

And also, she wasn't really a bankable star. Unlike the likes of Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan & Sandra Bullock. I wonder, was she even given a "headline role" at the time?

I was watching to this video that reviewed the 1996 movie Fear. And Liv Tyler was considered and offered Reese Witherspoon's role:

The reviewers said that Liv probably wouldn't have been the best choice. While Liv does have a gentle, "good girl" innocence about her that would make you want to protect her from somebody like Mark Wahlberg's abusive boyfriend, her screen persona still leans more on the "hippie" side. Reese Witherspoon they argued, more perfectly fits that standard "girl next door" image.

Plus, Reese is said to be 5'1 in height compared to Liv being nearly 6 ft tall. Simply put, it would be much harder to believe a tall, statuesque girl like Liv Tyler would be easy to physically bully around. Especially considering that Mark Wahlberg is about 5'8 in height, thus she's nearly a foot taller than him.

Liv Tyler seemed like she was going to be a big movie star but after The Lord of the Rings, she vanished from the scene.

I mean, aside from The Strangers, which was a hit, I can't recall anything she was in. I mean, when Lord of the Rings came out, she was so popular she got 3rd billing and the posters would always highlight her even though she only had 7 minutes of screen time for all 3 movies in total.

She was definitely the most beautiful young actress back then. She had a unique look. She was not a great actress but the camera loved her. I wonder if her career died when she started to lose her beauty or she just chose to focus on family and came back but she was no longer relevant.

Why Hollywood Won't Cast Liv Tyler Anymore

Liv Tyler looked set to become the next big thing in Hollywood after "The Lord of the Rings," so why did she fall off the Tinseltown radar?
