Too obsessed with Oscar Bait movies?

It's almost shocking he got Ready Player One made at all.

He's most certainly past his prime. Spielberg's main fault as a director is that he churns out projects as though he's on a conveyor belt. Over the years, he seems to have become more and more workmanlike in his approach to storytelling (serious award-winning biopic this year, special effects-laden sci-fi adventure next year, light-hearted uplifting dramedy the year after that etc). Much like Scorsese and Allen, the Spielberg of yesteryears seemed much more determined to prove himself and tackle projects people thought were outside of his comfort zone. Granted, he's still got one of the best technical eyes of any director working today, and he can still make a great movie when given the right script, but he's definitely nowhere near as crafty or inventive as he used to be.

Once I heard he was attached to a Blackhawk movie, I was genuinely excited for the first time in years. It felt like vintage Spielberg and he really hasn't tackled the superhero genre yet. But I doubt even that is gonna happen now.

He should stick to mature themed movies (like Munich, Bridge of Spies and Schindler's List). His days of kiddie friendly movies are long past.
