One Thing to Remember About The Slap
It was bad enough on its own terms(and followed by the profanity and anger) but...
...it happened right before Coppola, Pacino, and DeNiro came on stage to promote The Godfather on its 50th Anniversary.
"The Godfather" is rather sacred text in Hollywood, and both Pacino and DeNiro are "long distance" (from the 70's on), much revered, Oscar winning true superstars (give or take a few sell outs.) Coppola to a lesser respect has high respect because of two Godfathers and Apocalypse Now.
...and The Slap overshadowed that Godfather moment and took it away.
Oops.
Smith also rather ruined Jessica Chastain getting her Best Actress Oscar and whatever that forgettable movie was that won Best Picture...and created a building dread up to the moment he won his Best Actor Oscar (and everybody KNEW he was going to win this time; otherwise, he would have left early.)
But screwing up The Godfather? Bad move in Hollywood.
On the other hand, look what happened 50 years ago on the Oscar stage when Marlon Brando won the Best Actor Oscar FOR The Godfather. History repeats itself.
