US actor Will Smith has resigned from the Oscars Academy after slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage during last Sunday's ceremony.
"My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable," his statement said.
The Academy said it accepted the resignation and would "continue to move forward" with disciplinary proceedings.
This was the result of a crisis management session. If this was the best course of action to avoid losing and having to return OSCAR than I suppose it was a positive thing. Even if it means resigning.
Team-Smith feel if they move now the Academy will be shamed into looking like they are piling on a person struggling
with mental issues when they meet to take further action.
They will not ask him to return the oscar. Roman Polanski kept his and Harvey Weinstein kept his. Will Smiths action is far from what they did.

That being said, I could see them letting him keep the actual Oscar award statue but removing his win from the Academy's history. Less likely he could sue them for that. We shall see what happens.
