There seems to be racial undertones in the reaction to Smith's Slap

"Most people agree the slap shouldn’t have happened," says Tayo Bero. "But there’s something that feels precious at best, and downright racist at worst, about white people’s reaction to the now-infamous smack. The Hollywood director Judd Apatow declared in a deleted tweet that Smith 'could have killed' Rock (seriously?), calling it “pure out of control rage and violence”. Apatow later confirmed he wasn’t even watching the show when he made the remarks. The radio host Howard Stern compared Smith to Donald Trump, while white women on Twitter somehow decided that Smith’s actions meant he must be beating his wife. It would seem that there’s a layer of hyper-violence that’s being projected on to Smith simply because he is a Black man who was defending his Black wife. While it’s justifiable – important, even – to interrogate his motives for delivering the slap (was this really all about defending his wife or more about his own ego?), it’s clear that the backlash against Smith is rooted in not just anti-Blackness, but respectability politics as well. It’s also not just about what Smith did; it’s where he did it and who was watching. Anyone who has been following these shows can see that Smith is being held up to much stricter standards than white men who have behaved just as badly or even worse in those settings."

Sounds like a feeble attempt to somehow deflect attention onto white people, which in itself is racist.

Can you imagine the outrage if Will Smith was white and had hit a black man? There would've been riots and looting.

And people would be saying crap like 'white privilege', and 'this harks back to slavery'.

I thought about some of the what ifs too. And it’s weird. I’m not even sure the reason nothing happened is because it was two black guys. I think it might just be because it was will smith. I feel like if it was reversed and chris Rock walked up and smacked will, they would’ve thrown him out. Maybe I’m wrong. If a white dude hit chris rock or if will smith hit a white dude it seems like the outcome would’ve been different right? But only because people are so sensitive to racism and worried about doing it wrong.

People will find race in everything.

reply

Pointing out people shouldn't hit each other is not racist. If Tom Cruise did it, people would have had the same reaction. Additionally, the victim of the slap was black but the writer of this article avoids pointing that out.

What an idiot this journalist appears to be, making this about the reaction from white people being racist. She just drew up some examples that do nothing more than show how varied people's opinions can be to it. It has nothing to do with race.

And as for that last line, where else has a white man attacked someone on stage at an awards show as big as this, like Will Smith did, that you can say he's being held in stricter standards? Bringing up John Wayne for having to be held back by security doesn't count because no attack took place. It's not even like Will Smith has been punished for it. You think about this scenario during a high profile football match and he does it to an opposition player who insults him, he gets an automatic red card and banned for a good number of games.

Also, that happened in the early 70s. It obviously wasn't right but that was 50 years ago with most of the people involved being long dead. You can't compare people's reactions then versus now.

reply

The racist undertones was that Will Smith was never arrested for his assault. only people with more rights in this country than afromuricans are the little hats

reply

If he were white people would be screaming that it was due to white privilege.

In reality I don’t think it’s about Race at all. He is just rich and famous, so he operates under a different set of rules than the rest of society.

reply

he might be rich and famous but he is just a clowning cuckboy bitch at the end if the day

reply

Black guy can’t control his emotions and publicly strikes another black guy at a high society gathering over a joke about his slutty black wife.

Whites are evil for noticing.

reply

When have whites behaved as badly or worse in such settings and held to lower standards than Will Smith? Citation needed.
