Both equal successful, both equal popular for 3 decades. For me Charlie Wins, Charlie as Jack Reacher.

charlie make many good film in 1980s and early 90s. his career decline in mid 90s on when film become shit, but he have good run in this time.
tom cruise was same. many good film he make in 1980s and early 90s. all the right moves, losin it, top gun - great film!! i do not like any cruise movie after 80s excepts valkyrie and far & aways.
overall i prefer charlie sheens film. he more fun to watch. his film are great fun! i can watch most of his film, even bad ones.
I miss Charlie Sheen ! I wish he makes a comeback.

If Clint fucking Eastwood says that he thinks Cruise will be the biggest movie star in history, you better believe that I believe him. Who knows more about that than Clint? As for Sheen, I recently spent 10 months in hospital with mostly morons for roommates, so I wound up being exposed to a lot of 2 1/2 Men bullshit. HL Mencken, 1 of my heroes, wrote that “Nobody ever went broke by underestimating the taste of the American public.” THIS dung heap reflected the humor I was writing at age 12, when my nuts came on-line. Puerile and dumber than Republicans in a whorehouse, no wonder this was a hit. It takes a very special kind of homeschooled stupid to nominate Sheen as a peer to Cruise.
I loathe Cruise, but try as I might, I can't deny that he's been monumentally successful. In fact, he probably has the absolute highest success-to-talent ratio in history! Way ahead of even Keanu Reeves!
Sheen is just a minimally talented Nepo Baby. His fans like him because they wish they could get away with doing the awful things he does, not because of anything he's done in front of a camera.
I detest him as a human being, but the screen likes him and he is a good actor and good choice of roles too, though that is probably his agent.
Of course I detest Tom Cruise as a person due to his strange relation to Scientology.
As actors, I'd say they are about equal.
Cruise has TWO facial expressions - the big grin and the intense stare. That's all he can do for acting! But he does have Star Quality, which has nothing to do with acting ability.
I have no idea if any of his recent films are any good, I gave up on his movies ages ago.
Charlie's career could have gone in a different direction. He was considered for the lead roles in Born on the Fourth of July and Point Break. Oddly enough, he was also considered for roles which went to Woody Harrelson i.e. that could have been Sheen in White Men Can't Jump and Indecent Proposal.
