70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 00’s & 10’s

He has made THE best movie of each decade. No other director can come close.

Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
The Departed
The Irishman

reply

Steven Spielberg maybe, but youre right, such a great list!

reply

I agree.

reply

It's very rare he makes a less than great film, much less a bad one.

reply

All of the films which you list are excellent but I don't personally think that any of them is the best of its year, let alone its decade. He is undoubtedly a fine filmmaker, however.

reply

Just curious, so what do you think is the best film of each decade since the 70’s??

reply

Hmm... as of now...

70s: Stalker
80s: Au Revoir Les Enfants
90s: A Brighter Summer Day
00s: The Death of Mr. Lazarescu
10s: Mysteries of Lisbon

...but of course this is all subjective and one or two of these picks may change if I chose again tomorrow. And, of course, there are always the masses of potentially great films which I have never had the chance to see!

reply

Your right everything is subjective. But let me ask you, which other director since the 70’s can match Scorsese’s filmography?.

Each decade he has a instant classic. His movies have been of high quality. All the films I mentioned have been critically acclaimed by critics and audiences.

reply

While I think Scorsese is one of the best directors ever with a longevity which is astounding, there are others who have instant classics in five decades. Spielberg, for instance: Jaws; ET; Schindler's List; Catch Me If You Can; Bridge of Spies.

But the biggest one I can think of with a prolific track record like Scorsese's is Woody Allen. One movie a year, all of them good or great (that I've seen), and he continues to make masterworks like Blue Jasmine and Midnight in Paris. He isn't as mainstream or "big" as Scorsese, but his films are high quality. I'd take Manhattan or Match Point any day over many of Scorsese's pictures.

Quentin Tarantino's only been active for three decades, but his work is consistently blockbuster-arthouse-combo.

Alfred Hitchcock cranked brilliant films over several decades.

I'll give you this: Scorsese always has an all-time great coming out, and he is an AMAZING filmmaker, but I don't think he stands alone in terms of brilliant directors for several decades running.

Sorry the best movie of the 70's was Godfather Part II

Sorry the best movie of the 80's was the Empire Strikes Back

Sorry the best movie of the 90's was Pulp Fiction

Sorry the best movie of the 00's was The Dark Knight

Sorry the best movie of the 10's was The Dark Knight Rises

all the ones you mentioned though are very good, I also like Wolf of Wall Street

reply

LOL..THOSE ARE THE SAME CHOICES THE UNIBOMBER MADE.

reply

I don't agree they are the best of each decade, and I haven't seen The Irishman yet, but I do accept that the rest of them are classics. So even without The Irishman, that's an expanse of 30 years from Taxi Driver to The Departed which is indeed impressive. What's equally as impressive is that the standard of quality over that many decades is usually very high with Scorsese. Doesn't often make average or poor films in between his classics, unlike say, Ridley Scott.

GOODFELLAS WAS THE LAST AND ONLY TIME SCORSESE MADE THE BEST MOVIE OF THE DECADE,LET ALONE THE YEAR.
