Finally caved in and is doing a TV series

Working on an upcoming TV Series named Lady in the Lake

I guess her star power is fading if she is finally caving in and jumping into TV series. Disappointing.

reply

TV has been prestige work for a while now. Where have you been?

reply

Well this is fine. Personally I find her overrated.

Especially after that absurd film from last year - the one with Julianne Moore.

I can't think of the title

Anyway, in a recent interview, Natalie mentioned something she'd like to do I believe would be very interesting.

A sequel to "The Professional". Whatever happened to Matilda? What is she up to now? You could go a million different ways with it.

One would like to see this happen.

"A sequel to "The Professional". Whatever happened to Matilda? What is she up to now? You could go a million different ways with it."

They would ruin it by turning her into some action girl boss. Nah, pass.

reply

In the current state of Hollywood, that is actually likely to happen.

But I seem to remember she had quite negative opinions of the original movie according her interviews in the recent years.

I am guessing as long as it helps her career, like the original movie did.

reply

Well - you may be right. The interview I saw looked recent though.

She was asked point blank if there was anything she really wanted to do.

And she specifically said playing Matilda again.

Yeah, I could see it happening, but was "The PRofessional" a big cash grab? I don't know if it was a box office hit. ONly thing I do know is one thought it was terrific - a fave film from the 90s.

reply

The box office was not that great, but I think because it was a French movie, was not distributed by any of the big studios, which means limited screening.

Also no big name American actors. Neither Gary Oldman nor Natalie Portman was big at the time, both became famous after the movie.

But I think video tapes and DVD did much better, so I think it was considered financially successful, though I don't know for sure.

reply

Yeah, that's right. I believe it was Portman's first movie.

Jean Reno remains pretty well unknown, and Oldman, at the time, was just getting started.

Luc Besson wrote and directed it - he of "Taken" (he co-wrote it). So yes, a French production.

Whether it happens or not, I like the idea. I'm sure something interesting could come of whatever happened to Matilda.

reply

To be relevant to the original movie she would have to be an assassin of some kind, which limits the story. At her age it would an assassin approaching retirement.

I think Kate Beckinsale did a movie just like that, the most mediocre 'Canary Black'. Taken is another example, a better one at least.

It would be very different if they did the movie when she was in 20s, which could open up all sort of possibilities, Matilda could choose a future. But she was raking in money back then, she did not care about the story of Matilda. I think she still does not, but she is getting less and less roles.

reply

Hhhhmmm, interesting.

How about an older lady reliving her memories?

I agree, in her 20s, all sorts of possibilities for Matilda. YOu could have her as a housewife currently - then give her some reason to remember what she did in her 20s (top female assassin) and possibly have something happen in her current life (maybe her child is kidnapped) - and thus she must relive her past in a sense. It could be done, and it could be interesting.

"I think she still does not, but she is getting less and less roles."

Maybe so, I only know what I saw, and she was all on about playing Matilda again.

reply

Another way to go I think would be something similar to 'Polar', her organisation is coming after her, or the past is catching up to her.

Stories like that all have been done, you need an exceptional writer to have something different. 'Canary Black' would have been great if it were the first movie of its kind, but no, it is something has been done to death.

But have you witnessed a writer like that in the past 10, even 20 years?

Nolan when he was not too clever by half could probably do something different, but since it is Leon it is possibly going to be Besson once again.

But he has already done Taken, not sure he wants to do this again.

reply

I don't quite understand where it is you are coming from....

You think it can be done but no one is capable?

Or is it you don't think it can be done because it's been done already?

if you wish, can you clarify? ANd actually right now I have to head out for a few hours - I'll be back on later in the day if you'd like to continue the discussion.

reply

The retired spy/assassin stories were quite popular, I think have been done to death.

Like I said before if the movie was done when she was in 20s, there are much more options for the story, but now is quite limited, even in terms of female lead stories, there are already quite a lot, especially in recent years.

What else can be done for the genre? Or you just want another run of the mill story?

I think you need writers and directors known to do something different, but there aren't a lot of those.

Anyway, it is almost 3AM here in Australia, so I am done for the day. If you are interested we could pick this up again tomorrow.

ANything is better than another comic book movie. It is getting very difficult to come up with original ideas in Hollywood. But, I'd prefer "The Professional Part 2: Matilda" over "The Avengers 418" or whatever they're up to now.

"I think you need writers and directors known to do something different, but there aren't a lot of those."

Yeah, I agree. Perhaps a brand new Matilda story would be a rehash of some previous story. Still better than another comic book sequel, IMO.

Ok, Ill close since you're off with there is a sequel coming up I'm excited about "The Accountant Part 2". WIth Matilda, it's not that we are so far off, your points are valid. I'd still like to see it done though.

reply

Eeehhh, disagree.

More interesting than the flood of comic book movies.
