One Trick Pony

Natalie Portman has been in action, drama, comedy, science fiction, and other films.

I've been watching her act since The Professional was released on HBO in the 90's.

Here's the problem, aside from a dull look, smile look, and angry look, her only actually talent is the ability to cry. Other than that, she's actually a bland actress with very little to offer.

I have to agree with the OP on this one.

I, like the OP, set eyes on Natalie for the first time in "The PRofessional"

Outstanding flick - she was terrific in it. Natalie had big time star written all over her.

Well, she did become a big star, but I think it may be a matter of attrition. I can't think of one performance by her, as a full fledged adult actress, that I thought was exceptional. She's been ok in a few films ("Black Swan" and "Jackie" come to mind) But nothing special.

In fact, the last performance of hers I watched - "May December" - was embarrassingly bad.

reply

May December is the catalyst for my comment. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

reply

Hahaha - yeah, we're on the same page.

The lisping scene is an all time low. I was cringing as I watched it.

reply

I remember wanting to see her in Mars Attacks because I knew she was going to be in the new Star Wars movies. I rented Mars Attacks, and I liked it, but she had all the emotion of a block of wood. A short time later I saw her in The Professional and thought that she was really good, and she was equally good in Beautiful Girls, but after that, every performance that I saw her in she seemed wooden.

reply

Bingo!

reply

she has 84 acting nominations and 39 wins

reply

Which means nothing compared to her actual body of work.

Many award winning movies, actors, directors, etc... are crap. It's a political game in Hollywood and no measure of talent.

reply

False.

reply

True, but don't let it hurt your pride. You can enjoy her performance. It's usually just her crying.

reply

Why would it hurt my pride that you are wrong?

reply

You know award ceremonies are garbage when a toothpick thin girl (who doesn't do any of her own stunts) beats out a guy who (for real and does all of his own stunts) rode a freakin' motorcycle off of a couple of thousand-foot cliff and sky dives the rest of the way down...

stunt work and acting are not the same thing

reply

Happy indoctrination to you.

reply

thanks

reply

HE'S RIGHT..STUNTWORK AND ACTING ARE VERY DIFFERENT THINGS...YOUR POST AND POINT MAKE NO SENSE.

reply

Just because you disagree doesn't mean you're right. Aside from Your Highness, she has a minimum 2 crying scenes per film. That's her shtick.

reply

YEAH...I LOVE YOU...BUT AGREE WITH DARTHASSBUTT...NATALIE MAY NOT BE THE FLASHIEST ACTOR...BUT SHE IS SOLID WITH MOMENTS OF GREATNESS.

reply

*insert thumbs up emoji here*

reply

I didn't say she doesn't have moments, but they're usually when she cries.

reply

Totally true.
"Awards" have very little to do with quality, everything to do with politics and money.
Just ask Weinstein how YOU can win an oscar, he will show you the path regardless of your talent.

reply

Goodfellas lost to Dances with Wolves. Awards mean absolutely nothing.

reply

Wrong.

reply

Profound.

reply

THOSE ARE BOTH AWESOME MOVIES.

reply

Dances With Wolves broke ground.

reply

I think she is quite good in most of her films.

reply

I watched May December, upon your recommendation, and it didn't work for me and she's the majority problem. Holdovers did character study with one thomg this movie and Natalie Portman didn't have: Character

reply

The film is called Léon, you fucking inbreds.

reply

It was called the professional in the US until 2003. Then the marketing decided to change te title to Leon: The professional. This was to sell more DVD's while pushing Reservoir Dogs, the Matrix, and the Lord of the rings. Suncoast was a huge fan of this move and made sure to promote the movie as something new.

So, yeah, old guys like myself still refer to it as The Professional because we saw the Douchey ad campaign to change it to Leon because that's the French title.

reply

YUP...MY VHS COPY WAS THE PROFESSIONAL...I STILL HAVE NOT FULLY ADOPTED THE LEON:THE PROFESSIONAL TITLE.

reply

Same. My old VHS was the Professional and so is my dvd.

reply

PEOPLE WOULD ALWAYS THINK I WAS TALKING ABOUT THAT LEE MARVIN WESTERN, THE PROFESSIONALS.

reply

"Leon: the professional" the unedited international version has 25 extra minutes with amazing acting from Portman which is missing from the original. Wonderful acting when she's drunk. Even her eyes have a glassy drunken look.

reply

Agreed.
I loved her in Leon.
I was looking forward to see her next film.
She never matched that. Not even close.

reply

Agreed. But, is the problem Natalie's acting or the roles?

reply

I think it's her.
She is too one note, always the same, and when she tries more it comes off as phoney.
