Ranking His Work

How would you rank his creative output?

My ordering would be:

1. Mulholland Drive
2. Twin Peaks (Not including the season 2 episodes which Lynch neither wrote nor directed)
3. Eraserhead
4. Blue Velvet
5. Wild at Heart
6. Inland Empire
7. Lost Highway
8. The Elephant Man
9. The Straight Story
10. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
11. Rabbits
13. Dumbland
14. Dune

5, 6, 7, & 8 are virtually tied. They're almost equally great and absolutely showcase Lynch's artistic genius.

"Dune" is really his only failure in my opinion.

2. Twin Peaks (Not including the season 2 episodes which Lynch neither wrote nor directed)

David Lynch directed the following Twin Peaks Season 2 episodes:

S2.E01 - May the Giant Be with You (also co-wrote the story with Mark Frost)
S2.E02 - Coma
S2.E07 - Lonely Souls
S2.E22 - Beyond Life and Death

reply

I'm aware. I said not including the episodes he didn't direct. So in other words, not including the non-Lynch-directed S2 episodes.

reply

1. Twin peaks Fire walk with me
2. Mulholland Drive
3. The straight story
4. Twin peaks
(top four are equally treasured and all 10s for me)
5. Inland empire
6. Blue velvet
7. Lost highway
8. The elephant man
9. Eraserhead
10. Wild at heart

Best:

Mulholland Drive (His masterpiece all the way! such a brilliantly acted, written and shot film, deserved to be nominated).
Blue Velvet. (Saw this on video in the mid 90s in junior high and became an instant fave thriller of mine)
The Elephant Man. (Made by a small budget studio since it is a UK/US co production and was a surprise box-office hit and got nominations, powerful film)

Good:
Eraserhead. (Bizarre as hell and influential, perfect for stoning)
Fire Walk with Me. (A nice ending to the TV show)

Worst:
Dune. (OUCH! i love David Lynch but this movie sucked, poorly written, poorly paced, joyless, humorless, poorly acted and all that. I mean i love Lynch but his attempt to make big budget Hollywood Sci-fi blockbusters just isn't his thing, glad he returned to independent cinema where he belongs with Blue Velvet).

reply

Agreed about Dune. Pretty terrible movie.

reply

And do you agree with me that big budget Hollywood blockbusters just isn't for him and you glad he returned to independent films?
