His Best Films
Kline is definitely a underrated actor, even with his Oscar win. Fantastic comedic actor as well as a dramatic actor. Also been married to Phoebe Cates get's him two thumbs up. But what do you think are his best films and performances.
A Fish Called Wanda (1988)- Probably his best performance to date and his Oscar win, very deserving. The film is a lot of fun, especially the stuff between Michael Palin and Kline. Shame about the follow up film called Fierce Ceatures.
Sophie Choice (1982)- Still remembered for Meryl Streep's wonderful Oscar winning performance, but don't let that fool you but Kline is fantastic in his debut screen performance.
The Pirates of Penzance (1983)- Kline doing a comedic musical based on Gilbert and Sullivan opera, he's fantastic. Although I hear the TV version is far better then the film.
The Big Chill (1983)- A classic film of the 80's, probably William Hurt is the best thing in it. But Kline gives a great turn himself, and puts in some nice comedic touches as well.
Silverado (1985)- a underrated western from the director of the Big Chill, great cast and Kline as always puts in a great turn.
Cry Freedom (1987)- It's Denzel Washington show, but Kline carries a major bulk of the film to be fair and puts in one of his best turns. Great film.
I Love You To Death (1990)- This is really a underrated gem and doesn't get the love it deserves, Kline really does slime ball brilliantly in this. But Tracey Ullman and Joan Plowright steal the film. Kline and Lawrence Kasdan have a good partnership.
Grand Canyon (1991)- Another Kline/Kasdan film, always great to see Steve Martin do a serious role and he's great in this. Everyone is really.
Chaplin (1992)- This is Downey Jr greatest performance to date, but Kline delivers a great turn as Douglas Fairbanks. Great biopic
Dave (1993)- Probably my favorite Kline performance, he's fantastic in this both as the asshole President and the kind hearted everyday officer worker, great chemistry with Sigourney Weaver. This film deserves a lot more love.
The Ice Storm (1997)- Probably one of the better films of the 90's imo, Kline is excellent in this as is the whole cast. Probably Ang Lee's greatest film. But he's done so many.
In & Out (1997)- I like the film more then some others do, but it's definitely carried by a great Kline's performance.
The Anniversary Party (2001)- A family affair this one, with Kline and Cates playing a married couple, with their real life kids playing their kids in the film. I like this film, some find it full of crap. I think Alan Cummings and Jennifer Jason Leigh did a good job with this.
Life as a House (2001)- One of Kline's underrated films.
The Emperor's Club (2002)- A low rent Dead's Poet Society, but Kline put's in another great dramatic turn. Another one of his underrated films.
De-Lovely (2004)- A great biopic, with a great Kline turn on the life of Cole Porter. Ashley Judd is great too.
A Prairie Home Companion (2006)- Robert Altman's last film, Kline is one of many good performances.
Trade (2007)- One of Kline's more hard hitting roles about Sex trafficking. Playing a cop in this one and he's brilliant.
Queen To play (2009)- Kline speaks French, with Sandrine Bonnaire. Good chemistry between the two leads.
I named quite a lot of Kline films, the guy's not done many rubbish or meh films. Some might not agree with some I named on the list but he's definitely got one of the better C.V's for a actor around.
