The rumor was that Gere was banned from Disney World, because, after his last visit, Mickey went missing. I was on a press junket at Disney World. I asked one of their PR reps, a very savvy and smart lady, if there were any truth to this rumor. My colleagues all gasped at my nerve. The PR lady just smiled knowingly and said, “I’ll have to get back to you on that.”

I really liked her.

“If” is a conditional tense. It requires “were” as an adjective.
