I read that he is born Michael Andrew Fox. What is the story about his J. middle initial?

I've heard him jokingly say "Jenius" in interviews. It's a homage to Michael J. Pollard.

At the time that he joined SAG there was already a Michael Fox, so he had to do something to differentiate his credits. One of his favorites was Michael J. Pollard...

Absolutely correct. The first Michael Fox (He can be seen in the original Longest Yard as the announcer) has since passed but Michael J. Fox kept it.
