He went from being 'middle aged' in Heat (1996) to 'old man' in Meet The Parents (2000)

It was really surprising in 2000 that he was the 'old guy'/retiree, and yeah, he's an actor, playing a part, but I didn't see him as old at all only 4 years earlier.

He wasn't really an "old man" he was just retired from government work. My dad is done working and retired and is only 55. My older sister is also probably around the age of the daughter in the movie, and married with 2 kids.

They say retiring ages you dramatically and the sedentary lifestyle leads to cancer.

Sitting on your butt for 40 hours a week at the average office job is much more sedentary and unhealthy than anything else.

He could have kept doing the Liam Neeson thing. I think he switched gears on purpose. Just got sick of working so hard. Wanted to just bang out some easy paychecks.

Like...Marlon Brando. Who pretty much "checked out" of acting full roles after the one/two punch of The Godfather and Last Tango in Paris in 72/73. Brando cashed a lot of paychecks while only working in 20% of the screen time of the movies he picked (Superman, Apocalypse Now, The Formuia -- he WAS in The Missouri Breaks somewhat longer but ceded most of the screen time to Nicholson.)

And then there was..Cary Grant...who retired at the now-way-too-young(for a movie star) age of 62, in a leading man role above the title. Grant was rich enough to retire at 62 and lived 20 more years before dying at age 82.

Which is just a little older than DeNiro is now: 81.

Heat was released in 1995 you illiterate. And the fact you’re comparing a gritty crime thriller to a comedy tells us everything we need to know about you and your film knowledge.

The jump from RONIN (1998) narrowed it down to two years. Although, to be fair, he got back into some kind of shape for GRUDGE MATCH (2013)
It might just be that around the late 90's, his body started to age naturally...resulting in it not being as easy to get back into shape? (unlike his well-documented method weightgain/loss from his younger years)

reply

3 years before Heat he was a 20 something in Goodfellas.
