He could have kept doing the Liam Neeson thing. I think he switched gears on purpose. Just got sick of working so hard. Wanted to just bang out some easy paychecks.

Like...Marlon Brando. Who pretty much "checked out" of acting full roles after the one/two punch of The Godfather and Last Tango in Paris in 72/73. Brando cashed a lot of paychecks while only working in 20% of the screen time of the movies he picked (Superman, Apocalypse Now, The Formuia -- he WAS in The Missouri Breaks somewhat longer but ceded most of the screen time to Nicholson.)
And then there was..Cary Grant...who retired at the now-way-too-young(for a movie star) age of 62, in a leading man role above the title. Grant was rich enough to retire at 62 and lived 20 more years before dying at age 82.
Which is just a little older than DeNiro is now: 81.
