Will he ever do an original, non-action movie again?

Doesn't he feel trapped doing the same roles over and over again?
Can he still disappear in a role?
He's a movie star, but it's the IP what puts butts on the seats?

I have a feeling he will continue to do whatever keeps him on top makin lots of money. I prefer his smaller roles and supporting work and had he not chosen the path of a movie star he could have been a great actor. We’ll never know.

He IS A great actor. He would've won the Oscar for Born on the 4th of July had he not been up against Daniel Day Lewis for My Left Foot. He's had many a great acting performances. But unfortunately, it's like you said. He'll keep doing whatever makes him money. But maybe he'll surprise us with a dramatic role in an indie film or two someday.

He is a great actor but he is not fully realized.

reply

exactly. if they made another movie like jerry macguire, that would be cool

I agree, I wish he had taken more interesting roles like Vanilla Sky, Collateral and Magnolia now and again in between his big action movies.

With few exceptions, he now only does films made by his own production company. So he decides what he is going to do.

I think that Eyes Wide Shut took a toll on him Psychologically, he plays a bit of a cuck in the film and Kubrick kind of taunted him throughout the year and a half shoot. Remember he got divorced straight after that film.

I agree though that run he had from mid 90's until about Minority report was a really strong run and that was him at his peak. Vanilla Sky was received quire poorly though if i remember even though it's a great film but to be honest i haven't even watched a new Cruise film for over 10 years now, to me it's the equivilant of when McConoughy only did Rom Coms

I know it's just another Tom Cruise action film, but Edge of Tomorrow is really good. It's basically Groundhog Day, videogame style. Highly recommended.

you pose a great question. my prediction is he will do the occasional drama but pretty much keep on like he is doing now, though as he ages, ie 70-75 he may begin opting for more dramatic 'fatherly' roles, provided the script(s) are good. it's all about the script.

IMO jerry maguire is one of the best films he ever made. pure character piece.
