Magnolia. One of the best performances.
Collateral
Risky Business
Few Good Men
Minority Report

Rain Man

A lot like yours. Good list.

reply

Too difficult to pin down just 5. In no particular order....
Vanilla Sky, The Last Samurai, Minority Report, Edge of Tomorrow, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men. 7 is the best I can whittle it down to. There's just so many good ones.

Magnolia for sure. It's Cruise's best performance (in my opinion) but the movie overall is spectacular.
Collateral, also, for Cruise's performance (which is underrated) and for how tightly-paced it is.
Eyes Wide Shut, which is one of Kubrick's lesser films, but lesser Kubrick is still high-grade cinema.
Vanilla Sky is underrated and a good mind-bender.
The Last Samurai is as profound as it is slick, and as cool as it is poetic.

This is a *really* hard list to put together. I'm leaving out a tonne of good films. Cruise has one impressive filmography!

The Firm
War of the Worlds
Minority Report
Edge Of Tomorrow
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

Dakota Fanning 's character makes War of the Worlds a hard watch for me at times. 😩😩

On another note, they filmed some scenes of the movie in the next town over from me.

reply

Yes. She is screaming all the time.

Did you happen to visit them filming at the time?

reply

Unfortunately no, I was working. They were only here for a day or 2 and the people that did go to watch didn't get to see anything.

reply

That sucks. But your right about Fanning. I was thinking the other day about her screaming throughout the entire film...reminded me a little bit of Newt in "Aliens".

reply

I have a different list above, but YES to Ghost Protocol. I had forgotten about it. I saw it at the IMAX and I couldn’t believe it. I felt like I was hanging out of the window 130 floors up - it is unbelievable what he has done for the Mission Impossible films with regard to the stunts but GP takes the prize and it was for me the best of the MI movies.

Magnolia is at the top of my list. I thought his performance in Magnolia was unparalleled and nothing like he’s ever done.

reply

Cruise is really weird. But he's probably the last box office superstar (whatever that is anymore)? left on the planet.

So he gets props for that.
