Over the course of more than 35 years, Tom Cruise has evolved from a floppy haired heartthrob into one of the most powerful and polarizing figures in Hollywood. He flew straight into the hearts of female viewers the world over as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in aerial romance Top Gun (1986), and he won the male vote as Ethan Hunt in the stunt-laden Mission: Impossible franchise (1996-), gradually building a reputation as one of the film industry's genuine megastars. But somewhere along the way, the love Cruise had grown accustomed to began to fade, and the public's perception of him changed drastically. Once the man that every guy wanted to be and every girl wanted to be with, the name Tom Cruise has since come to mean something completely different on both sides of the gender divide, but why? This is how Cruise became so hated in Hollywood.

Not really. Of course I would love to have his life and do whatever I want because I would have all the money I would need. But I don't have it and I am happy with the little I have. This been said, it doesn't change the fact that he is a liar, a manipulator and a shitty husband (and this for many wives). And if I'd have to only consider his actig career... Well he had his highlights back in the 80s-90s, that's for sure. But apart from a few roles, did he really prove himself as an versatile and outstanding actor? Not so much. Even when he was in great movies he was often the weaker (without necessarily saying weakest) point acting wise.

Adam Sandler looks and acts like a little kid on sugar. Cruise is the guy you want to wake up next to in bed.

Actually, both are very good actors in the right role, Cruise and Sandler are way more talented most people like to admit

He just hasn't done anything I've wanted to see in years. He is still a great actor in the movies I have watched despite all the Scientology stuff.

Edge of Tomorrow was pretty decent (even though wasn't original at any level). But really? Jack Reacher? I would rather go to see another sequel to Mission Impossible than to rewatch it.

They just looked like the same old type of Tom Cruise movie. I'm also not always into Big Budget blockbusters but having not seen these maybe I'm wrong and they are stellar.

No, you are not wrong. These films are not stellar. Your intuition steered you clear from a cache of schlocky mediocrity.

The best part about Oblivion was the cinematography and Joseph Trapense and M83's outstanding soundtrack.

Jack Reacher was one of the most ho-hum forgettable action-thrillers I've seen in years.

Edge of Tomorrow would have been better served with a less bombastic take from Hollywood. A more grounded and visceral experience provided from a director like Neill Blomkamp would have really helped make that film pop, especially with a more subdued performance from a lead actor like Sam Worthington, Gerard Butler or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Absolutely not! Sam Worthington has no charisma at all compared to Tom Cruise! Edge of Tomorrow was considered good by both critics and users.

A more stoic actor like Sam Worthington would have worked well for Edge of Tomorrow because he's less distracting than Tom Cruise, who made the film almost all about him.

At no time did it ever really feel as if Cruise's character was in irrecoverable danger or a perilous situation in which he couldn't get out of. Never once did I suspect that he would die at the end even when they teased it.

Come to think of it, Matt Damon would have been pretty good in the role or Jeremy Renner.

I think some people follow actors and watch everything that they're in and others watch them if they're in a movie genre they like.
For me it's the latter with Tom.
There are movies I'll avoid if a certain actor is in it,for example Nic Cage (apologies Nic Cage fans).

The whole Scientology thing is a bit nuts but it wouldn't put me off watching him.

Me either, imagine all the movies you wouldn't be able to watch if you wouldn't watch a movie with a Scientologist in it? A lot of the younger actor were raised in Scientology as well. I'm sure some people join to try and help their careers at that Celebrity Center.

It's difficult isn't it.I'm not aware,beside unsubstantiated Hollywood rumour,of any harm Tom Cruise has caused to another human being.
I know there is possibly animosity between him and Nicole Kidman but honestly that's true of many couples who have split.
I don't really see it as my business,since I don't know any of the parties personally.
At the end of the day nobody knows.

He doesn't make films I go out of my way to see. The last one was the thing where he was on the Nazi team that tried to blow up Hitler....and that was a while ago.

Mine too. I haven't been a fan of his since what he did to Nicole Kidman. He basically took her children away from her by forcing them to disconnect due to her "supressive person" status, then he claimed she had an affair with her "Moulin Rouge" co-star Ewan McGregor who Cruise claimed fathered the child Nicole ultimately miscarried due to the stress of Cruise filing for divorce. Nicole was entirely blindsided by it all. That kind of asshole deserves none of my money or my time. I think what Katie Holmes did was fitting payback. I love that she has sole custody of Suri. Good on her for choosing her daughter over his cult.

Haven't seen one of his movies since Tropic Thunder.
Funny thing is that might be his best performance.

Honestly, I think the turning point in public perception of him with the American public came in that bizarre Oprah couch jumping episode. Seems to half the public, myself included, he came across as trying way too hard. To the rest he just seemed like a weird freak.

It should be noted how much he's still box office to international audiences which is why he still gets paid the big bucks.

What strikes me is that someone that can do such a good job of playing such a totally normal, All-American guy in his movies can be such a repressed, scientology bizarro in real life. I have nothing against him or his movies, if it's a movie that I already want to see, like his movie American Made this past year, I'll probably see it. I've also enjoyed watching him in the sci-fi steampunk themed flicks I've seen of him in the last decade or so. But I won't go out of my way to watch his flicks just because he's in it.
