Sean's Best, Worst Bonds

Basically, Sean Connery was incredible in his first four Bonds...Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball...unbelievable talent, presence.

However, he had very forgettable performances in You Only Live Twice, Diamonds are Forever, and Never Say Never Again. He was okay in You Only Live Twice, but the script was all action and offered him little in the way of acting. Diamonds are Forever was a horrible production and Connery seemed very bored and disengaged. Never Say Never Again was a complete joke - it could have been directed by Ed Wood. Connery at this point was not a convincing Bond...he was frail and soft spoken.

Diamonds Are Forever constitutes one of my favorite 007 films. The choice may be esoteric, but the film is extremely atmospheric and distinctive, both visually and aurally. Connery's Bond in this film is packing more pounds and proving less athletic, but he is also more imposing and intimidating than ever—almost scarily so. Bond in this film—and the environment around him—have become truly surreal. Shirley Bassey singing the title song—as she had in Goldfinger—also helps.

If Never Say Never Again counts, it would represent my least favorite Connery Bond movie.
