Even though polls weren't looking good for him, we will never know for sure that Biden would have lost.
shareDemocrats were in a pickle of their own making, so it's hard to blame it on Clooney. Had Biden stayed in the race, Trump would have won anyway. Clooney was trying to help push Biden out and his efforts (along with other Democrats) worked. I don't believe people who say that Democrats would have been better off if Biden had stayed in the race.

Still, Clooney played a major role with his high profile NYT op-ed that made it safe among party elites to insist that Biden not run for reelection. Before that, Biden and the party were militant that he “just had a bad debate” and would never withdraw. An incumbent President withdrawing from his party’s nomination is incredibly rare. Future historians writing about this remarkable event will certainly include Clooney’s role in starting the ball rolling

The fact the article was published means the democrat establishment had already decided. I think the article was the dump order, as you said to start the ball rolling.
Though I did not read that article before today, and did not know Clooney was so integrated to the democrat establishment.
