Whispering

Why does she whisper all the time when talking in The Fall? Every. single. episode. It really gets hard to watch after a while. Shame, coz I really like her & the show.

I think she did a great job even when filming with laryngitis. It fits the character, since Stella doesn't need to shout to be authoritative.

I came to this site to say the same thing!!! While I really enjoy the show, I've become increasingly distracted by Anderson's incessant whispering. I can understand that some scenes might warrant soft speech, but she whispers needlessly through the entire episode. It's so odd, and her sibilant voice becomes the focus instead of what she's actually saying. I'm finding this to be especially true in Season 3.

I don't mind the "whispering" at all, especially because so many scenes take place at the hospital or involve one-on-one conversations. By the way, almost every character in season 3 talks in a soft voice. Listen to Paul/Peter in episodes 4 and 5 - whispers all the time, but people only notice that quality in Stella. LOL

I did notice Paul, but as you said, it's only several episodes he whispers. Gillian has done so ever since season 1 episode 1. Plus lots of people have picked up on it, so it's definitely distracting.

Don't get me wrong, I love Gillian Anderson, always have since the x files. The voice tone suits the character, sure. But not constantly. No one is like that constantly. She needs to vary the pitch.

I agree, I wouldn't mind a change of tone in her voice every now and then, it's been 3 seasons...I get it's her character and some scenes really require whispering, but sometimes it's too much.

It's probably subjective and/or people are used to characters being assertive through shouting. I didn't mind the "whispering" from either Stella or other characters, and I don't think she "whispered" in the first two seasons; she just spoke in a low voice, and the few instances in which she raised her voice (when her colleagues screwed up again LOL) were all the more striking because they expressed her utter frustration, anger, loss of control. Even Spector "borrows" that strategy when he wants to appear to be in control of the situation.

I just supposed this is how Stella Gibson speaks as a character. I used to think Scully was sort of a quiet mumbler until I watched The Fall. Now Scully practically speaks with "pep" in comparison! Haha
