This is from Wikipedia:

“ He requested that his tombstone read "Feo, Fuerte y Formal", a Spanish epitaph Wayne described as meaning "ugly, strong, and dignified".[96] His grave, which was unmarked for 20 years, has been marked since 1999 “

Does anyone know why his grave would have been unmarked?

Those pictures were taken after the year of 1999. The article I cited said it was unmarked until the year 1999.

PRIVACY...DUDE WAS AN ICON...HIS GRAVE WOULD HAVE BECOME A SPECTACLE.

I thought that might have been the motive, and maybe in 1999 they felt enough time had passed.
