John Wayne had just one "nationality"... American!
Now his "heritage" in the other hand, was indeed Scotch/Irish.
Interestingly, most Americans with an Irish or Scotch/Irish heritage who do their research find that their lineage only passed through Ireland. The vast majority of those "Irish" immigrants that came to the US were no more than 2 generations removed from Scotland.
A great many Scots that went there found that Ireland did not suit them. So, they booked passage to America. Once here, many found homes in places like NYC & Boston, others settled in the hills of Appalachia which reminded them of the Scottish Highlands. Still others married into the Native American tribes, predominantly Cherokee, because the Tribal ways were much like life in the Scottish Clans. In fact, the Chief of the Cherokee Nation who led the tribe on their Trail of Tears (and who also happened to be my ancestor) was 1/4 Cherokee and 3/4 Scot.
But the Duke was 100% All American!
The hyphen is something that divides people. Anyone who calls himself an African-American, or German-American, or even Irish-American, is a Divided-American.
