I swear I read a book back in the 1980s, saying she had full-blown Borderline Personality disorder.

Which is only a theory, a theory that has been kicked around through the decades and neither confirmed nor denied, because it *can't* be fully confirmed or denied. Diagnosis is difficult enough on a living person who's able to cooperate with the diagnostic process, but we're talking about someone long dead and who didn't get adequate mental health care during her lifetime. And about whom many lies and exaggerations have been printed, so much that it's now impossible to get a fix on her real personality. She wasn't mentally healthy, but who the hell knows if she just had a bad anxiety disorder, or a full-blown personality disorder.
