shareI liked Brotherhood of the Rose
shareI've always been unaccountably fond of "River of No Return", the movie he made with Marilyn Monroe in the early fifties. It starts out as a standard western with a cowboy meeting a saloon singer, but it quickly moves into a really awesome river journey by raft.
Marilyn is charismatic and beautiful, if not believable as someone who'd be found on the frontier, and Mitchum is his usual in-on-the-joke likeable self.
I think I've seen parts of this. Niagara is a completely different movie, but it involves Marilyn and H2O and also comes to mind. I wonder if in River they have a wet shirt Marilyn shot? That would be something to see.
shareThe Night of the Hunter (1955)
shareThis is an easy choice and a good one. It does have it's detractors, though. All the actors are asked to ham it up, except maybe Lillian Gish, and even she is a bit of a caricature. Plus the kids have to carry the film, and as actors they are a little meh. But it's very vivid and well shot. Charles Laughton's only directorial effort.
shareI'd forgotten that one, the obvious winner!
Strange and beautiful little film, it's set in the modern world but captures the feeling of a fairy tale better than any Fantasy film. Mitchum's best performance, and a sad financial failure at the time. Laughton never directed again, which was a loss to the history of film.
I love Macao with Jane Russell, directed by Josef von Sternberg and Nicholas Ray.
shareWow. That's a bit out of left field. Interesting ! I think Jane was in some John Wayne oater, or maybe Jimmy Stewart or Hank Fonda. I suppose if I mention three of the biggest names of the time and use the word Western, I'd have to be right somehow.
shareTwo for the Seesaw, as I do adore Shirley MacLaine and I like the play. I'd also have to go with The Night of the Hunter, and Cape Fear (1962). Cape Fear was my first introduction to Mitchum.
I really liked The Big Sleep
shareI have to go with the most obvious - The Night of the Hunter.
Close runners-up: Angel Face, Out of the Past, Track of the Cat, The Red Pony.
