Or perhaps they just thought Kelly's performance was more deserving of the award. It's possible.

Both actresses died tragically young. Kelly’s perfection was just an illusion. Never understood why she married Rainier at the peak of her career. It hardly looked like a love match and her family paid him a huge dowry. It just looked like a stunt to play out some 1950s Cinderella fantasy.

Aren't there rumors out there that Grace Kelly married Rainier as a way of "protecting" her image? There has been a lot of talk that Grace for a lack of better words, quite the "ho over there" in Hollywood.
