Lets talk about cruise ships....?

Have you ever been on one? If so, did you like it? I wonder how common it is to hear loud debauchery on board, lol.

reply

Never been on one and never will go on one.
Way too many people in way too tight space, way too expensive, way too limited options of what to do, virtually no chance of doing anything spontaneous that isn't planned from start.
There's literally nothing on a cruise ship that you cannot have better and cheaper elsewhere and there's no destination a cruise ship could go to that you cannot go to by yourself for cheaper and stay longer.

My wife was on a cruise ship once when she played in a bridge tournament that was held on the ship during the cruise and she said when she came back, she wouldn't do it again even if someone paid her for doing it.

For someone who has never cruised you seem to be quite the expert.

reply

Never said I was an expert, but the impression I got from documentaries plus what my wife told me is for me enough to make up my mind.

I did the Star Trek cruise. It was fun because I was with other Trekkies, did Trek activities and met a few actors from the shows.

The Trek group was a smaller part of a regular cruise ship, therefore I did other activities like siteseeing, tours, etc..

Zero debauchery. My group was wholesome and nice. Ditto the nonTrekkies who appeared to be families and older travelers.

I liked doing a theme-based cruise so maybe I'll do others, although I prefer walking around town rather than being stuck on a ship.

There was plenty to do on the ship and on shore.

I really like the idea of travelling on a ship, but things like "loud debauchery" is what turns me off.

I went on one on a cruise ship to Norway, didn't hear any loud debauchery though

I've been on 71 cruises,(only reason I know that is because my husband kept track of them), and have traveled all over the world on cruise ships.

Obviously, I love cruising and would be the first to admit like everything in life, it's not for everyone, but I can only say that I think it's a great value when you consider you have a lovely cabin,(optional private balcony to sit on and relax), all meals, sometimes included alcohol, entertainment. It can be as active or relaxed as you want.

IMO, the only "downside" to cruising when traveling to some locations is that you only have one, possibly two days in a port, so it's not the same as spending a week in a particular spot, but I have found that to be great because there are places where I have felt one day was enough and others I have loved and have gone back to on a land trip.

My parents probably went on 20 cruises. Finally I go with them, the whole family went (favorite aunt died.)

Never again. I got the impression that everybody working on the boat was "one frown away" from being sent back to the third world country they came from. It was like the scene in Platoon where Charlie Sheen yells at the VC kid "what are you smiling at!"

I don't vacation in the third world.

I've been on the mailing list of https://www.vacationstogo.com/ for many years and have never pulled the trigger. Nothing against cruising, I think maybe I don't like to travel in general.

The two cruises that appeal to me are Alaska and Transatlantic.

I used to watch the Love Boat every week. But I have never had any desire to go on a cruise. It just doesn’t appeal to me.

Now if I won a free cruise I would go. And I would take along a suitcase full of books that I never get a chance to read. Perhaps it is just ‘shipboard” activities which do not appeal to me. No shuffleboard, swimming, fancy dinners or midnight buffets for me. I just like to veg out and read.

My family and I went on a cruise to The Bahamas in early January 2020. We all enjoyed it, but I don't think it's something we'll ever do again. Nassau was a lot of fun (We got to swim in the ocean there) and Freeport was OK, except it was unseasonably cooler and windy that day. I'm glad we went, but probably not something we'll ever do again.
