For Those Who Don't Like American Football

What are one or two things that you would change?

The Super Bowl is Sunday.

Here's a highlight reel for Saquan Barkley, Running Back for Philadelphia

I would get rid of the worthless female commentators who are only their because they slept their way to the top.

reply

I don’t think there are any. There are only female sideline reporters.

reply

No padding.
On second thought, they should be naked.
Positively Greek.

Only one or two things? I got lots:

- Change the name to "throwball".

- Limit the constant stopping.

- Make the point system more basic.

- Get rid of all those people on the sidelines. It looks like a damn parade is going on there. It should only be the coach and his staff. Move the media somewhere else.

- Expand to Canada or Mexico or stop calling the Super Bowl winners "World Champions".

- Make time stop when play is dead.

- 16 game seasons are laughable.

- Broadcasts should stop analyzing every damn play. Not all plays are worth seeing again.

That is the team on the sideline. There are 53 players, and only 11 on the field at a time. There are around 20 coaches, plus trainers. Then there are the officials carrying the first down markers. There isn’t much media there.

I would support international expansion, I think it’s a really cool concept. In 1991 the World league tried it with 6 is teams, 1 in Montreal, and a European division with teams in London, Frankfurt, and Barcelona. That league ended up being more popular outside the US and eventually became nfl Europe. But I don’t know if the sport would get supported long term outside the us.

It’s 17 now, but that is enough. Just look at the rate of injury that the sport has.

Rugby plays 30+ without wearing equipment other than head protection.

Make it more like rugby. There's too many stoppages.

I'm an American and I never watch football or any other sport. I find them boring. I'll probably watch an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie instead of the superbowl.

reply

The first thing I would change is the name of the game, because it's mostly played with the hands, not the feet.
The second thing would be whole set of rules that is basically made up just to show most players from both teams crushing into each other, no matter which player has the ball, interrupted every few seconds just to setup the same scene again.
The way it is, it isn't even a game, or at least I wouldn't call it a game, it's brute force of players against players just to give the quarterback a few seconds time to decide what to do with the ball.
Fairly often the players who make the deciding difference are those who never touch the ball and that's absurd, because it underlines this isn't a ball game but a show of raw violence.

I never watched any of the regular matches, I watched the Superbowl just once some 20 years ago and due to the overload of interruptions with only seconds of gameplay in between, it was probably the most boring sports event I've ever seen, watching a chess match is more exciting.
