Have you ever dropped a show because it took too long between seasons?

So getting a season of a show every calender year is a thing of the past nowadays.

I don't miss 22 Episode seasons (except for sitcoms) as much as others do but I do miss Cable shows' release schedule. The season lengths were perfect imo. 10 to sometimes 15-16 episodes. And you got a season per year.

Nowadays, you get 6 to 8 episodes every 2 to 3 years.

Severance season 2 came out recently after almost 3 full years. The first season was excellent. I asked my lil bro if he started watching it & he said he completely forgot about the show. And his interest was kinda gone.

Same thing happened to me with The Witcher. My friends and I loved it but the second season took so long that I genuinely lost interest.

Heck, even the Starnger Things hype has fizzled away for me. I have so little interest in the final season. The gaps between seasons is just way too long.

No wonder shows aren't lasting THAT long nowadays. Because by the time the next season rolls around, no one even remembers the previous season. And the interest/demand for it is just not there.

Well, the last show I watched regularly was

"Curb Your Enthusiasm"

Big fan the first four seasons. It started losing its touch in Season 5. By Season 6, I didn't think it was funny anymore.

After S6, the new seasons were erratic. One of them (don't recall which one) had a 6 year gap.

Ultimately one completely lost interest, but it isn't fair to say it was because of the erratic scheduling. It was more so not caring for it anymore.

For me, season 9 is when it jumped the shark. I didn't bother with 10 & 11, though I have seen some clips on YouTube.

reply

Did you watch the first 4 seasons?

At that point, it was original, very funny. I'd laugh hysterically. Plus S2,3 and 4 had really good story lines.

But, like anything else, the originality fades off. The story line in 5 wasn't all that good. The story line in 6 wasn't good at all - nor was it funny anymore. I might have one minor chuckle per episode.

That was enough for me. You made it to S9? So I'm guessing you thought S7 and 8 were good???

reply

Of course I loved 1-4, and I liked 5-8 more than you did...9 is when it all went downhill for me...Fatwa arc not funny, and right from the start it seemed like recycled humor...Larry lost his mojo! And Leon started to wear out his welcome, whereas up to then I thought the character funny.

reply

We're actually on the same page.

The thoughts you just mentioned, totally agreed.

Larry David became a character unto himself (lost his mojo). The Larry David character was more embarrassing than funny. I remember Leon in S6 - didn't care for him either.

The other thing I noticed, in S6, is the jokes started to repeat (recycled humor).

So, yeah, totally agreed. Only difference is I bailed out earlier than you did.

reply

Ya, I kinda fell off Curb because of the unpredictable release schedule as well.

Most times, I honestly didn't even know a season was even out.

reply

For fun I just looked it up.

It actually went 12 seasons! LOL - didn't have a clue.

The 6 year gap was between S8 and S9.

It looks like S12 is the end of it.

I can't recall watching any episodes from S7 -12.

Anyway, its been nice chatting with you today.

Best wishes.

Same to you as well.

Billions
Westworld

After season 2 or 3 I thought these shows started going downhill, but I definitely would have stuck with them anyway, if the seasons had come out sooner than they did.

reply

The Witcher - I agree liked Season 1 and after Season 2 interest dropped I didn't bother watching Season 3

True Detective - Pretty much 5 years after Season 3 that Season 4 came out. Not that invested anymore to get back into watching the show

Veronica Mars - Still haven't seen the Hulu revival with Season 4 back in 2019 it was pretty much a 12 year gap in between and I've seen the 2014 movie, but I kept seeing that a lot of people hated and were pissed off with the revival ending so I didn't bother

reply

Ya, same here with Veronica Mars. Loved the tv show during my teen years but ya, I'm not one for nostalgia.

I rarely get excited for reboots or legacy sequels. Just not my thing.

reply

No. I've only quit watching a show because it didn't interest me. Like Agents of Shield. I lost interest at the beginning of season 3. Or Once Upon a time in season 6 cause they villified King Arthur.

reply

Watched all of Agents of Shield. Came out at a time when the landscape of Superhero tv shows was kinda barren.

Season 1 was kinda rough. Peaked with its fourth season..

Couldn't get into Once Upon a time. Preferred Grimm.

reply

For me it's the other way around.
Since so many series are coming out that nobody can keep track, when I stumble into an episode of a series I haven't seen anything from before and I like this episode, I check where I can find previous seasons.
Even when they do a reboot of a series, totally new and independent of the previous, I still look up the old series.

reply

Not really.

I usually just wait until the show is done and watch it in one go.

reply

I don’t lose interest because of the long breaks between seasons. What happens is I forget about the show!

It has happened to me several times. One show in particular was The Shield starring Michael Chiklis. Completely forgot about it until I saw a review of the series finale.

I could not believe I forgot it. So I ended up buying the whole series to rewatch and to see the final season.

Dutch tv used be very stupid where they would begin airing a show and quit airing it for budgetary reasons or whatever. Sometimes the show would return years later. That's pretty much the only way I'd stop watching it for that reason.
