The Question Of the Day For Thursday, Jan 9th, 2025

I'm a curious individual by Nature and I've been pondering this Question for awhile, so here it goes: Excluding me who doesn't own a Smartphone Device, I'm going to assume that 99% of this site does in 2025 now and I was wondering, Statistically speaking, what percentage do you use your Smartphone Devices for actually talking on the Phone portion of VS Surfing the Internet and simply texting only?? Go!!

reply

I've never owned a smartphone. I have a flip phone and I hardly ever use even it. I don't have texting service and I've never ever sent a text. It's not a matter of money---I could afford one--I just spend a lot of time on my desktop computer at home, I don't need to carry around one in my pocket.

reply

So you don't ever use your flip phone to call your parents or text friends and rely strictly on your laptop??

reply

Well, I'm 65 so parents are gone, and I moved to Reno in 2013, leaving behind a few friends in the NY area, we occasionally communicate via e-mails...so my phone is shut off except for once a day to check to see if I have any messages--

Realistically and honestly, I probably only use my smartphone to talk on the phone about 5% of the time. To add to this picture though, I don't like talking on the phone in general. My preferred means of communication are either in person or in writing, such as via text.

I use my smartphone for calls but I like to browse the Internet on my breaks at work.

I use my laptop and tablet at home.

reply

89% surfing/posting.. 10% texting & 1% actually talking on my smartphone.

reply

Only using it for texting and the odd phone call.

I think they're abominations due to the spying they do on people but I need it for work.

reply

My wife doesn't and I don't really know what I have one for.
I have an over 10 year old smartphone that has cost me 199€ back then and I got that only because there was a discount offer for a contract with unlimited phone calls in all of Europe and the US plus 30GB traffic in 4G for 5.99€ a month, guaranteed price forever. I just couldn't refuse that.

In practical use I use that phone to make international phone calls for free, which I do less than once a year and for access to services that require a digital signature, such as the national health service here in Italy in case I'm too lazy to drive to the doctor for a prescription.
That's it, effectively I'm not even making enough use of it to compensate the 5.99€ a month.
When we leave the house I leave the phone at home, I have no use for it, because for emergencies my wife has a prepaid regular mobile phone (without smart) that costs her less than 5€ a year only because that's the minimum recharge one has to do per year to keep the number active, she has like 50€ credit on that phone because she never uses the 5€ she has to put onto it per year.

When people ask me why I don't use it more I usually answer, I don't see why I would use a 6.7" screen while I have a 75" 4K TV I use as monitor on my desktop PC that has 1gbit internet.
There just isn't anything I might want to do on the web while I'm outside that cannot wait until I get back home.

reply

I use mine for work, probably 80/20 surfing/phoning.

I primarily use my iPhone to:
1. make phone calls (no landline)
2.text
3.take photos

I have quite a few apps but only use them as needed - check the weather, Mapquest, Ring Doorbell, remotely set my home security, use for a calculator - stuff like that.
