2024 in review

This year is the year I gave up on going to theaters.

You have a few okay movies, but most were sequels. By October, I actually hated movies and TV.

The most popular movies were still mediocre or absolutely annoying fanservice garbage like Deadpool and Wolverine.

Movies that suck include Fall Guy, Argyle, Lisa Frankenstein l, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, late Night With the Devil, Night Swim, Founder's Day, Imaginary, Dune 2: more Dune, etc...

2024 = 3.5/10

Good riddance. Hollywood deserves a bankruptcy reorganization.

reply

Did you mean 2024?

Either way this is the same complaint I have heard since 2000. Everything is going to shit and nothing is as good as it used to be.. yadda yadda.

No offence, but it sounds like you’re not looking hard enough for the many gems to be found in the rubble.

This problem is as old as humanity, the impression "in old times things were better" has always existed and never been true.
A German comedian once explained it very well, I don't really remember all the details, but basically he took things from 200 years ago and asked whether people would really want to get back to that.
Like working 60+ hours a week, children working in cole mines, a trip to the next town taking a day to get there and another day to get back, average life expectancy just over 30 years, mostly due to child mortality, people who made it to their 30s bday in good health had an additional life expectancy of another 30 years, but that's still very low to the almost 80 we have nowadays where child mortality is already included, etc.

I for one am old enough to remember what movies and TV were like 50 years ago and ..... no thanks ..... I don't want that back.
It's been less than 75 years since color TV was invented.

I liked Late Night With the Devil, but I agree with the rest. I still think there are good movies out there, you just have to sort through a lot more of them to find ones you like.

reply

Dang bro! Cheer up, like sslssg said, there’s more good ones for 2024.

My favourites at the moment:

Smile 2 8.8
I saw the TV glow: 8.7
Deadpool and Wolverine 8.5
The Substance 8.2
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 8
Kinds of kindness 7.7/10
Love lies bleeding 7.5
Speak no evil 7.5
Beverly Hills Cop: Alex F 7.5
Longlegs 7.4
The monkey man 7.4
Lisa Frankenstein 7.4
Civil war 7.3
Abigail 7.3
Sonic 3 7.3

reply

Aside from Abigail, I hate every movie on that list.

Sorry.

reply

Ouch!

reply

It's just a difference in opinion. Sorry.

I really hated this year in film. It felt like the B-team got the A-team equipment after taking a bunch of laxatives and running onto the field.

At first it seems fine, then you laugh when it starts, followed by disgust when the smell hits and finally despair as you realize it was all doomed before you even sat down.

reply

I have to agree. I don't think I enjoyed a single film from 2024.TV-wise I only enjoyed Baby Reindeer and Rivals, but they wouldn't make my list of top 100 TV shows.

I'm seriously considering not watching any new media in 2025, given that I have a hard drive full of media to get through.

reply

Nosferatu is amazing!

reply

I've heard mixed things. The people saying it's amazing seem starved for movies with camera technique.

reply

Not me I really enjoyed Longlegs, Civil War and Gladiator 2.
