I saw The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024) in a theater; I think it was a $5 Mystery Movie.

The closing credits might have shown what happened to all the real members of the group. I think all or nearly all died during the war. I looked it up later.

Before its release Henry Cavill complained that Alan Ritchson showed up for filming "fat." He was clearly joking, as you could see in the first scene.

It looked to me this afternoon that this movie was only available on STARZ or Amazon Prime. I subscribe to neither.

Did you like it when you saw it in theaters?

reply

Yes, I liked it.

reply

Any idea what the mystery movie this week was? Just curious.

reply

It was September 5, about the 1972 Olympics where the Israeli team was taken hostage, in theaters this weekend. It's about the TV news crew. People who saw it post their reactions in the Reddit threads dedicated to identifying the movie before it shows. West coast people count on those in the east coast who identify it in the theater.

Change the Reddit listing order from Best to New, to get a realistic feel for how the threads work.

Gladiator 2 was the first blockbuster to be aired as a mystery movie, which stunned the Reddit members trying to guess the film in advance. A Regal employee has leaked the exact runtime in the past, but another film had the same runtime as Gladiator 2. One person reported that more than one theater was being used, so they suspected Gladiator 2.

Most of time, it is released in the upcoming weekend. The distributor includes the mystery movie box office with the Thursday box office and reports that as their Friday box office. So Gladiator 2 used the mystery movie shows to boost its first weekend box office on the same weekend that Wicked came out.

There is another AMC Screen Unseen and $5 Regal Mystery Movie scheduled for this Monday, Dec 16, 2024. It's always been the same movie for both. Cinemark theaters sometimes does it too, and they gave dead giveaway hints a year ago.

Okay, weird. I saw a mystery movie listed this week on the 9th at my local Regal, but maybe it was a misprint. And to think I thought I'd missed a chance to see Kraven: The Hunter!

reply

The Regal I went to was permanently closed after December 1. They had packed them in for Moana 2 (which I took kids to see), Wicked and Gladiator 2, so it was a shame they did not delay closing.

I can walk to an AMC with recliner seats, which helped put the Regal out of business. But that AMC raised its prices of its Tuesday discount from $5 to $7 and then raised the Screen Unseen price to $7. So I stopped going. Why pay the Tuesday price without knowing the title? But I still report the mystery movie on the movie's MovieChat page, to help the Central, Mountain and West coast people who don't read the Reddit threads. I never even read Reddit until I was searching to find the mystery movie title a year or two ago.

I could always post the mystery title in General Discussion too.

I'm going to start doing some "Yo Mama" style jokes for tonight's movie:

This movie is such a Tarantino knockoff it might as well have been called "Unglorious Basterds."

reply

This movie might as well be starring Chuck Norris. đź’Ą

reply

This movie features so many muscular actors that it might as well be called "The Ministry of Gains."

reply

The Musclery of Ungentlemanly Warfare

reply

This movie is such a retread of its director's previous work that it might as well have been called "Lock, Snatch, and Two Sherlock U.N.C.L.E.S"

reply

This movie was so guy Richie generic that it might as well be called Operation Fortune 2: The Ungentlemen

reply

Missed opportunity for "Wrath of Aladdin."

Movies based on real events often get a "History vs Hollywood" article. You can see photographs of the actors against photos of the actual people.

While the basics of this story are true, a great deal of the details were fictional and time was condensed.
