Its the most trivial dumb sport that exists. You put a freaking ball in a basket, thats it, thats all you do, and you have a bunch of people and celebrities pretending like these "athletes" are doing something amazing and then one of them puts the ball in the basket they all cheer like woow thats soo impressive! Get the fuck out of here.
There are a variety of athletic skills and LOTS of serious physical conditioning required to be a successful baller. Personally I enjoyed playing the game but was never very good at it.
I was never terrifically athletic tbh.
But much like NHL Hockey or NFL Football the college and professional level requires pretty serious athleticism and lots of practice.
True but there is more of a celebrity courtside phenomenon here that is pure bullshit, OMG lebron dunked, like who gives a FUCK, you're putting a ball into a basket thats it, a dog can do this. You're not curing aids here.
I'm not sure how old you are... but, if you're a fairly young guy (say, 35 or under), it's a shame that you probably didn't get to see the "glory years" of the NBA. The 80s, with the Celtics, 76'ers, Pistons, and Lakers, and then the great Michael Jordan and his Bulls' teams of the 90s. It was fun to watch back then.
I recently saw a clip on my Facebook feed that featured a game this season between the Lakers and the Suns, if I remember correctly. It was about 2 minutes long and it was embarrassingly bad. Not a single point was scored...a bunch of bricked 3-pointers and missed short shots. LeBron James bricked a couple of threes...I don't watch the NBA anymore, but I really believe he's largely responsible for ruining the NBA today. He should have retired a couple of years ago... but I find today's NBA to be unwatchable, especially based on that clip.
I was born in 1971 and as a kid I enjoyed watching basketball. Playing Nerf Hoops in my parents' living room I was always Dr. J or Darryl Dawkins. But by the time I got to Middle School, I started to lose all interest in the sport as its "urban" nature became front and center. That's a culture I have no relation or attraction to.
And I struggle to see the attraction in dunking. For athletes that size and skill, it's a task that's comparable to the dexterity you and I demonstrate while unlocking our car door. And I don't know about you, but there's no crowd in my driveway ready to chimp out when I head to work in the morning. A man puts his hand through a large hoop while holding a ball? What's the big deal? Yet to watch a crowd of Basketball-Americans react, you'd think the person doing the dunking just invented cold fusion.
For some reason, this video showed up in my feed a few days ago, a comparison of the 1987 and 2024 NBA All Star games. What a fucking joke!
