Stuffing vs. Dressing

I think people who call it "dressing" are the same people who hang their toilet paper under (against the wall).

reply

We never called it "dressing". But I'm guessing stuffing is stuffed dressing.

reply

I've been under the impression that if it's stuffed inside the turkey it's called stuffing and if it's served separately it's called dressing, but being the rebel that I am, I usually call it stuffing even though ours is a separate dish.

I will say though, that I would be much more forgiving of someone using the word dressing than hanging the toilet paper under. Hanging the toilet paper under is grounds for some sort of mental health assessment.

Hanging the TP under should be grounds for divorce in all 50 States!

Do you have a cat? I think that hanging the toilet paper under is completely forgivable when one has a feline who likes to use the toilet paper treadmill.

reply

I do, but she is the textbook definition of a scardey-cat. She'd probably jump and run as soon as the paper started rolling. πŸ˜‚

reply

After I lost a couple of rolls, I decided that I'd be an under until he mellowed.

reply

I think that makes you exempt from toilet paper judgement. 😁

reply

He's gone now, so I'm back to over, but it did take me awhile to make the switch back.

reply

I'm sorry. 😞 I understand.

Same here. I make mine outside the bird and we all call it stuffing, not dressing which is the technically correct term.

But it gets more confusing when you consider the retail product "Stovetop Stuffing"..

reply

Yes! My family ate a lot of Stovetop stuffing growing up, even when it wasn't Thanksgiving. I do love me some wet, spiced bread. πŸ˜‚

reply

That's exactly what I thought the difference was.

A rose by any other name....

I've never heard anyone call stuffing "dressing" before; never even knew that was a thing at all. It's not like with soda vs. "pop." I've never heard anyone call it "pop" in real life, but I've always known it was a thing in certain parts of the country, and have heard it on TV and in movies.

"Dressing" is what you put on top of salads. It's an oil-based concoction unless it's a "low-fat" / "fat-free" version, or Miracle Whip (an ersatz mayonnaise product which says "dressing" on the label, though I've never known anyone to actually use it as salad dressing), in which case it's water-based and should be cheaper, but of course it's not.

I thought maybe it was a regional things she was referring tl but I have never heard anyone say "dressing" and apparently no one else here has either.

reply

I think it's a regional term. In the South, it's dressing and only dressing. It only becomes a debate everywhere else.
