Wearing a coat

Do you wear a coat when you go out and it's cold outside if you will be going straight from your house to your car and then your car into a building?

I hate wearing coats and almost never do if I won't have to spend a considerable amount of time outside. They get bunched up and then you have to figure out where to put them when you go somewhere that you can't hang them up.

I get fussed at or have comments made a lot. Am I the only person who hates wearing a coat if I'm not going to be outside for long?

On behalf of all Canadians: no.

reply

Perhaps I'm secretly Canadian. In the SE US going without a coat (or at least a jacket) in weather under 60° F is gonna get you some judgment.

“Do you wear a coat when you go out and it's cold outside if you will be going straight from your house to your car and then your car into a building?”

No i don’t.

reply

I'm glad I'm in good company here. Last year I went to the doctor without a coat when it was between 50-60° F (wearing long sleeves and long pants) and the receptionist made a comment about my lack of coat.

reply

If it's cold enough yes.

reply

Do you have a temperature cut off when you decide to put it on? I probably would not wear a coat realistically (if I'm going straight from the house to the car to another building) unless it was below freezing. Even then it might not happen.

reply

If it's less than 40 degrees that's cold enough for a coat.

reply

If I was going to be outside for any length of time like watching a sporting event or something like that under 40° I would wear a coat. If I was going straight to a car and then a building all of which were heated probably not.

reply

Yes, always, and I prefer to keep a spare cap and jacket in my car as well.
Imagine if your car breaks down late in the evening on your way home from work and it’s really dark and cold! Those extra layers could save you from serious pain and harm.

Personally I like to keep a baseball bat and a screwdriver in the vehicle as well just in case I encounter a maniac but that’s just me, but I guess these items are optional.

reply

That's a good point you bring up. If it's really cold outside- freezing or below for sure- although I might not actually wear a coat I will take one and have it in the car in case of emergency, along with the blanket we keep in the car.

reply

A car blanket is not a bad idea👍

If in fact it's cold, one wears a thermal hooded sweatshirt jacket.

"I hate wearing coats and almost never do if I won't have to spend a considerable amount of time outside. They get bunched up and then you have to figure out where to put them when you go somewhere that you can't hang them up."

Makes sense

"I get fussed at or have comments made a lot."

Al that matters is you wear whatever it is that works for you. If someone else doesn't like it - who cares?

reply

I'm lumping coats and jackets together so I would say that a jacket counts.

When I go out in the cold, even though I generally don't wear a coat I do layer up. Like a shirt with a sweater for example.

And you're right, whatever works for each of us. That's the point. If I'm going to only be outside for a short period of time it's more uncomfortable to bring along a bulky coat or jacket than to go without one. If I'm going to be outside for a long period of time it's more comfortable to have the coat on. 🙂

reply

Ok I just changed my previous answer because it wasn't clear.

Yes, indeed - wear whatever works for you, whatever makes you happy.

ANyone's else's view on the matter is irrelevant.

reply

Your previous answer was fine, but your new one is, too. 😊 I was asking what you guys did so no worries.

reply

Just to add, in fact I do wear pajamas all the time.

It was unusual at first. I'm now starting to notice plenty of others doing the exact same thing.

So, maybe what you do will catch on. ANd people looking at you sideways now, may eventually follow your lead.

reply

I see plenty of people wearing pajamas out and about, at least in casual scenarios. My neighbor wears pajamas all the time.

reply

There's actually another reason a lot of people wear pajamas while they're out and about.

There's no static at all.....

😁 I knew that's what that song was going to be before I clicked it.

reply

Yes , but do you know the additional reason as to why so many people are walking around in pajamas and tee shirts these days??

It's to avoid massive amounts of....

😁 I see!

Well, aside from their bulkiness one of the other main reasons I don't like to wear coats is this.

LOL - good one

Hey 4L - this is off topic, but fun just the same. I was out running errands, caught this one on the radio.

Another terrific 70s track. See what you think......

reply

Jeez! It’s like scrolling through my Spotify playlists.

reply

Great song but even better because it's in the pilot of Freaks and Geeks, one of my all-time favorite shows.

reply

Thanks to Andy and 4L.

4L has got me zoning in on 1970s music. You can't beat actual musicians and actual singers that actually sing and actually play, LOL.

With that in mind, one more off topic - plus I need to pipe up here to start working out. This 1970s band, I love em. I think they're very underrated. They've got a ton of music one enjoys. This track happens to be my fave. IF you two get a chance, let me know what you think....

Great song and great group. If you have access to Yacht Rock Radio on Sirius XM you'll get to hear plenty of them.

reply

Yep, agreed on that one.

SOunds good - thanks for the info on Yacht and SIrius.

reply

Not really.

Well, should you change your mind I found this one for you.

Damn hipsters...

I don’t know how far you drive daily and from where nor should I but an extra layer of clothing and a couple of easily explained weapons in the side saddle are a good plan.

There are a lot of nuts on the road and the nights can get cold buddy.

reply

I have my emergency road kit and a good shovel. It's very good in a tight situation.... and the cleanup afterwards.

reply

Right on. A well prepared man is very much respected.

reply

Space blankets are a big help. They're compact and good for winter kits.

reply

A couple of shotguns would be nice as well but The Man seems to frown upon that!

reply

Mine were lost in an ice fishing incident.

reply

Yes, I do. Even if the car is right in front of my house, the walk from the car to wherever I'm intending to go could be longer or colder than expected and maybe the temperature at that place is too low for my liking. And there could always be some unexpected rain.

reply

Well it's all about comfort and if wearing a coat makes you more comfortable then you should do it.

Rain is another story, though. If it's just sprinkling I would only use an umbrella. If it's pouring down I would put on a raincoat regardless of temperature.

reply

Of course it's personal preference. Living in a country that's very rainy and windy, I personally do find a coat more handy. I mostly use an umbrella in the summer or when a coat doesn't go with my outfit.

reply

What car do you drive?

reply

It must be wild to live in a climate where your chance of freezing to death is almost nil if you're not properly dressed.

Wear a coat starting in late fall until spring and then a grass skirt and a halter top. Wait that might not be totally accurate.
