Being able to "like" comments here (and elsewhere)

What are your thoughts on being able to "like" comments on this site with a thumbs up button, like on Facebook, Instagram, etc.?

I've seen it suggested before and no offense to anyone who likes that system but I'm glad we don't have the ability to do that. I think being able to like comments turns it into a popularity contest and could affect how people post.

Actually, I think the "like" system is potentially one of the most damaging things on the internet. 😏

reply

Glad it isn't here as I think it would reduce discussion and this is specifically a discussion and chat board. I think it's OK to have it elsewhere as long as you have the dislike option too like Reddit (though disliked comments shouldn't be hidden). Youtube getting rid of the dislike button was ridiculous imo. If you have a like button you need the dislike button too, to balance things out. Having one without the other limits speech and expression.

Like this? πŸ“ŒπŸ“ŒπŸ“ŒπŸ“Œ

I don't believe I've ever used that emoji before. It's always nice to take one out of cold storage.

reply

You got it. People here go wild for the pins!

reply

Especially those who’s name start with How.

reply

Lol you know it

reply

I agree, it encourages folks to post thought-provoking topics in the hopes of causing a spirited discussion instead of merely farming for likes...There's enough of that nonsense on other sites!

Also, howgamer makes an excellent point- YouTube's neutering of the dislike button was utterly ridiculous, if you have one you need the other!

reply

I like that term you used, "farming for likes". I've never heard it stated that way but that's exactly what it is. Farming for likes puts authentic communication at risk and encourages people just to say what they think other people want to hear.

This πŸ‘† 100% this.

Reddit is bad enough; let's not turn this into another one.

reply

I'm glad you agree. πŸ™‚ I think about the kids of today who have never known a world without social media and the "like" system, and with all the time they spend on their phones, I wonder if it not only has affected how they communicate, but also how they equate social media popularity with their self worth.

Growing up before the internet age I think helps us grown-ups to at least put it in perspective, although the momentary rush from getting likes can probably mess with the mind at any age.

reply

I like these comments.

reply

I'm glad you like these comments which means that you don't like likes.

reply

Yes, I like not liking likes.

reply

I liked a comment once.
Hated it.

I get the impression and correct me if I’m wrong that our posters tend to be opinionated, witty and funny rascals.

I say no to πŸ‘ and πŸ‘Ž.
Hearing your real chats kind of makes my day.

I love you guysπŸ’•lol

reply

Aww, I love this community, too. ❀

Even though I am fortunate to have a pretty close family and some good and true "in-person" friends, I don't discount the impact that an online community can have. I'm very thankful I (finally) found ya'll!!

A "Like" is not a response. Either a response, or no response should do.

reply

Agreed. If you like something that someone else says you can let them know in your continuance of the discussion.
