In the early 2000s Tony Scott tried to make a Grand Theft Auto Movie.

It would have had Eminem as the main character. Just him directing would have been awesome.

Sounds like a fun project. Any news source on that?

I found it by looking up unrealized Tony Scott projects but if you google Tony Scott Grand Theft Auto movie you'll find several articles about it.

I looked up the source articles and they contain a lot of secondhand information about Scott's involvement. No one committed to the project, and the rights were not even secured from the game publisher. As nice as it is to imagine, this is one of those projects that never got past initial talks.

My guess is that producers had a couple meetings/calls with Scott, who expressed enough interest for them to turn it around and use his name when requesting the rights from publisher Rockstar who bounced it. One of many instances in film production where nothing materialized.

Yeah I guess I phrased that wrong, I should have said "In the early 2000s a Tony Scott Grand Theft Auto movie was attempted.

Probably for the best it didn’t materialize, GTA is one of the best video game franchises ever created but I don’t think they’d make good movies.

I'd only agree cause Hollywood tends to screw up video game movies. Otherwise Tony Scott, David Ayer or Joe Carnahan could've made a good movie out of it. Michael Mann could have directed an awesome show adaptation.
