Would you consider this saying racist?

"The more White customers who frequent a Chinese restaurant, the more bland the food is."

I've heard this before - yes, it's a variation of the "white bread" jokes. I admit it's somewhat funny but then again I'm not White anyway. I also don't think it's true either - I've been to Chinese cuisine restaurants that had good food in my opinion and they also had many White customers (or I just have bad taste, hehe....)

Anything you say in 2024, whether it's a joke or a statement will be deemed Racist. Everyone is Racist to a degree whether they choose to admit it or not

reply

I’ve never heard that. I have heard people say that you should look for the Chinese restaurant with the most Asian customers because the food is likely to be more authentic, which I guess is a variation of your quote.

I don’t think either statements are racist though. It’s not as if it’s suggesting that white people are inferior because their food is less spicy.

reply

I'm super white and I enjoy Chinese food very much.
NO apologies.

I like the soy sauce and spicy mustard.

Anyway, how are you doing you rascal you!?!

reply

I'm doing alright, man. Thanks for checking up on me. How are you, bro?

reply

Glad to hear it, I’m still in one piece over here🤓

reply

My wife is from SE Asia and we always say that the best Chinese restaurants are normally full of Chinese people; nothing racist there.

reply

I could see that being the case!

reply

Maybe so, but it wouldn't bother me (I'm white).

What is disconcerting to me is the hypersensitivity when it comes to racism.

Someone can make the slightest statement - Oh that's it! They're a racist!

When in fact, probably 95% of the time, it's simply the person on the other side being oversensitive.

reply

My 10 year old daughter jokes about this all the time.

So there you go folks, it’s now reached the stage where a 10 year child thinks it’s ridiculous.

reply

Do you mean she jokes about the racism oversensitivity?

If so, a bright young girl, she is exactly right.

It has become ridiculous.

reply

“Do you mean she jokes about the racism oversensitivity?”

Exactly this; I’ll say something innocuous and she’s shoot me a faux outraged look and declare, “racist” knowing full well that it would be the most tenacious of connections.

I get the impression Gen Alpha is going to be a lot less circumspect than Millennials and Gen Z.

reply

Good, I'm GENX and sick of the entire racism business.

Seems like it came into full focus with the OJ Simpson trial , subsequently becoming worse and worse.

Yeah, that would be nice, your daughter's generation realizing how stupid it is.

reply

It’s fairly multicultural where we live, so it’s all normal to her. Plus my wife and I call her The Hybrid (yes, we’re terrible parents).

reply

No. I don't see how that's racist.

Guess what? You'll get a more traditional Italian pizza from a restaurant in Naples than you will from Dominoes.

Guess what? Enterprising owners of Indian restaurants in areas where the population mostly isn't from the Asian subcontinent will adapt their recipes to better suit local palates.

Guess what? The Mexican food most Americans are familiar with is rather different from the food they actually serve in Mexico.

It's just expressing a point about the authenticity of the cuisine, isn't it?

*Shrug*

reply

I would need to understand what that means first? White consumers cause the cooks to slack? What is it?

reply

I guess supposedly it means White people have bland tastes - so they would frequent a restaurant that has bland food.

reply

It is racist but white people don't whine about it like other white people would on behalf of blacks.

reply

I find that stereotype to be racist, and quite frankly ignorant, as it attempts to group all white people together, when there is a ton of diversity among white countries. I’m not sure what white people food is supposed to be. Italian? French? I guarantee they would make any list countries with the best food.
